Earth Song lyrics

What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain...
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
This crying Earth its weeping shores?

Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh

What have we done to the world?
Look what we've done.
What about all the peace,
That you pledge your only son?
What about flowering fields?
Is there a time?
What about all the dreams,
That you said was yours and mine?

Did you ever stop to notice,
All the children dead from war?
Did you ever stop to notice,
This crying Earth its weeping shores?

Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh

I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don't know where we are
Although I know we've drifted far

Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh
Aaaaaaaaah Oooooooooh

Hey

what about yesterday
(What about us)
What about the seas
(What about us)
The heavens are falling down
(What about us)
I can't even breathe
(What about us)
What about everything
(What about us)
I given you
(What about us)
What about nature's worth
(ooo, ooo)
It's our planet's womb
(What about us)
What about animals
(What about it)
We've turned kingdoms to dust
(What about us)
What about elephants
(What about us)
Have we lost their trust
(What about us)
What about crying whales
(What about us)
We're ravaging the seas
(What about us)
What about forest trails
(ooo, ooo)
Burnt despite our pleas
(What about us)
What about the holy land
(What about it)
Torn apart by creed
(What about us)
What about the common man
(What about us)
Can't we set him free
(What about us)
What about children dying
(What about us)
Can't you hear them cry
(What about us)
Where did we go wrong
(ooo, ooo)
Someone tell me why
(What about us)
What about baby boy
(What about it)
What about the days
(What about us)
What about all their joy
(What about us)
What about the man
(What about us)
What about the crying man
(What about us)
What about Abraham
(What was us)
What about death again
(ooo, ooo)
Do we give a damn

Aaaaaaaaah Ooooooooh

teddy pendergrass rip

Teddy Pendergrass started singing gospel music in Philadelphia churches, becoming an ordained minister at ten years old. While attending public school, he sang in the citywide McIntyre Elementary School Choir and in the All-City Stetson Junior High School Choir. A self-taught drummer, Pendergrass had a teen pop vocal group when he was 15.

By his late teens, Pendergrass was a drummer for local vocal group the Cadillacs. In the late '60s, the Cadillacs merged with another more-established group, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. In 1970, when the Blue Notes broke up, Melvin, now aware of Pendergrass' vocal prowess, asked him to take the lead singer spot. It's no secret that Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff wanted Marvin Junior of the Dells for their Philadelphia International Records roster. Since the Dells were signed to Chess, they were unavailable. When the gruff'n'ready vocals of Pendergrass came their way, they eagerly signed the group.

Beginning with "I Miss You," a steady stream of hit singles flowed from the collaboration of Pendergrass and Gamble & Huff: "If You Don't Know Me By Now," "The Love I Lost," "Bad Luck," "Wake Up Everybody" (number one R&B for two weeks in 1976), and two gold albums, To Be True and Wake Up Everybody.

Unfortunately, the more success the group had, the more friction developed between Melvin and Pendergrass. Despite the revised billing of the group, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes featuring Theodore Pendergrass, Pendergrass felt that he wasn't getting enough recognition. Around 1976, Pendergrass left Melvin's Blue Notes and formed his own Blue Notes, featuring Teddy Pendergrass. Briefly, there was some confusion as to which Blue Notes were which. The resolution came when Pendergrass disbanded his Blue Notes in favor of a solo career and Melvin's group signed a recording contract with Source Records, distributed through ABC Records, scoring a hit with "I Want to Be Your Lover."

Pendergrass signed a new contract with Philadelphia International Records in late 1976/early 1977. He burst back on the scene with Teddy Pendergrass, a platinum solo debut that included the top-notch singles "I Don't Love You Anymore," "You Can't Hide From Yourself," and "The More I Get the More I Want." Around this time, Pendergrass began to institute his infamous "Ladies Only" concerts. His next three albums went gold or platinum: Life Is a Song Worth Singing (1978), Teddy (1979), and Teddy Live (Coast to Coast). The hit single "Close the Door" was used in the film Soup for One, where Pendergrass had a small role.

The singer received several Grammy nominations during 1977 and 1978, Billboard's 1977 Pop Album New Artist Award, an American Music Award for best R&B performer of 1978, and awards from Ebony magazine and the NAACP. He was also in consideration for the lead in the movie biopic The Otis Redding Story. The '70s ended, but Pendergrass kept racking up the hits. TP, his fifth solo album, went platinum in the summer of 1980 off the singles "Turn Off the Lights," "Come Go With Me," "Shout and Scream," "It's You I Love," and "Can't We Try." It's Time for Love gave Pendergrass another gold album in summer 1981, which included the hit singles "Love TKO" and "I Can't Live Without Your Love."

A 1982 car accident left Pendergrass paralyzed from the waist down and wheelchair bound. After almost a year of physical therapy and counseling, Pendergrass returned to the recording scene, signing a contract with Elektra/Asylum in 1983. His ninth solo album, his Elektra/Asylum debut, Love Language went gold the spring of 1984. Philadelphia International issued two albums of unreleased tracks, This One's for You (1982) and Heaven Only Knows (1983). Other albums included Workin' It Back (1985), Joy (1988, whose title track went to number one R&B for two weeks), and Little More Magic (1993). The latter half of '90s found Pendergrass recording for the Surefire/Wind Up label. Truly Blessed (the name of an 1991 Elektra album) is the title of the autobiography Pendergrass co-authored with Patricia Romanowski.

world champs 27 th time

NEW YORK -- This was the ultimate dream that the Yankees waited so long to achieve, as they clustered at the center of their magnificent new cathedral and celebrated the perfect ending to the inaugural season of Yankee Stadium.

Finally -- and forever -- a 27th World Series title is now theirs.

In what my have been his final game in pinstripes, Hideki Matsui drove in six runs and Andy Pettitte stepped up on short rest to help get the ball to Mariano Rivera. The Yankees' mission statement was completed on Wednesday with a 7-3 victory over the Phillies in Game 6 of the World Series.

With old foe Pedro Martinez standing in the way of the end to a nine-year title drought, Matsui starred on the biggest stage of his career, belting a two-run homer and drilling a two-run single off the Phillies right-hander to provide the old workhorse Pettitte with a cushy advantage.

Once a fresh face of the dynasty, Pettitte tugged the bill of his cap low over flecks of gray hair and prayed that his left arm could deliver the World Series rings with one more night to remember -- this start on three days' rest, an equation that has given him mixed results over the years.

Pettitte needn't have worried, attacking the Phillies' lineup and holding the National League champions to three runs over 5 2/3 innings, extending his all-time postseason record with an 18th victory and his third in a clinching game this year.

The speed bumps for Pettitte came on a two-run Ryan Howard homer and a Jimmy Rollins sacrifice fly, as he scattered four hits and earned every decibel of a loud standing ovation from the crowd of 50,035 as he jogged off the field.

Descending the dugout steps while acknowledging the roar, Pettitte's effort and those behind him in relief allowed manager Joe Girardi to make the easiest decision he has had all postseason -- put the ball in Rivera's right hand, the best closer history has ever known, and wait to celebrate.

The on-field exultation would not have been possible without Matsui, who played in the 2003 World Series after coming over from Japan and saw the franchise fall into a dry postseason patch, wondering if he would have the opportunity to feel the exhilaration of a New York championship.

Matsui put the Yankees back on top with a hard-fought at-bat against Martinez in the second inning, belting the eighth pitch for a high, arcing drive that landed in the second deck of the right-field grandstands -- the third home run of this World Series for the designated hitter.

It was a crushing early blow against Martinez, who was loudly serenaded with ringing chants of "Who's Your Daddy?" a leftover from 2004, when Martinez eventually got the last laugh. Not this time, as Matsui struck in the fourth with a bullet liner that brought around Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon.

Mark Teixeira touched Chad Durbin for a run-scoring single in the fifth inning and Matsui blasted the capping blow in the fifth, a two-run double off J.A. Happ. The six RBIs from Matsui tied a Major League record set by Bobby Richardson in Game 3 of the 1960 World Series.

More importantly, it put the champagne on ice in anticipation of the Yankees' 11th postseason win after 103 in the regular season, leaving them as the last team standing and uncorking a raucous, loud celebration at Yankee Stadium and throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

It was a journey that began by steamrolling the Twins in the American League Division Series. The Yankees then emerged victorious in a hard-fought AL Championship Series to topple the nemesis Angels before meeting the National League's best in the 105th Fall Classic.

Philadelphia presented a challenge, especially after Cliff Lee handcuffed the Bombers' potent lineup in the first World Series game played at the new Yankee Stadium, but the Yankees won three straight before losing Game 5, providing the opportunity to celebrate the championship at home.

To hear the Yankees talking about the anticipation driving them, this push was for the "core four," as Jeter, Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Rivera returned to their glorious youth, partying like it was 2000 all over again and acquiring a fifth ring for the thumb, 3,296 days after the last one.

It was the wish of those who have put in their time without ever had the opportunity to taste the sweetness of that stage, like Matsui and Alex Rodriguez, who played major parts in powering the Yankees here after coming to New York years earlier and being rebuffed time and time again.

And above all else, it was for principal owner George M. Steinbrenner, whose declining health has been no secret and watched the first two games of the World Series from his box seats at Yankee Stadium before taking in this victory via television from his Tampa, Fla., home.

A certain urgency was embedded in the Yankees' actions during the offseason, as they doled out $423.5 million to acquire the top three free agents on the market, fitting ace CC Sabathia, right-hander A.J. Burnett and Teixeira for pinstripes and incorporating them into a clubhouse that meshed wonderfully.

The biggest statement was the five-word slogan affixed to the franchise postseason run -- "Win It For The Boss."

Those within the Yankees family thirsted to present Steinbrenner with the opportunity to savor one more moment, and with Girardi wearing the uniform No. 27 as a daily reminder of the job expectation, they finally have

NEIGHBORS OF Charlenni Ferreira said they never saw signs to suggest that she was being abused by her family.

Then again, they rarely saw the 10-year-old girl outside her Feltonville home.

The glimpses they did get of Charlenni in recent years suggested a youngster who was "sick" in some way. She was quiet and thin, they said. She walked with a limp and had a swollen face.

But Charlenni's situation apparently was far worse than neighbors imagined. The fifth-grader at Feltonville Intermediate School suffered years of horrific, torturous abuse at the hands of those closest to her, police said.

On Wednesday, she died of a lung infection caused by a lack of medical care, hours after she was found unconscious in her home on C Street near Louden, said Sgt. Ray Evers, a police spokesman.

Yesterday, the District Attorney's Office approved charges of murder, endangering the welfare of a child and related offenses against the girl's father, Domingo "Anibal" Ferreira, 53, and stepmother, Margarita Garabito, 43.

At a news conference, Homicide Capt. James Clark called the alleged child abuse "one of the worst cases that I have ever seen."

He confirmed afterward that Charlenni had been sexually assaulted, but did not elaborate.

Later in the day, police officials said a medical examiner found injuries to Charlenni's vaginal and anal areas. No sexual-assault charges have been filed against Charlenni's father or stepmother.

Doctors from St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and the Medical Examiner's Office noticed "several old and new injuries" on the girl, including severe head trauma, bruising of her back, leg and torso, a recent fractured hip bone and injuries, police said.

They said that Charlenni had a gash on her head that had been covered with a hair weave.

Clark said that Charlenni's two stepbrothers, ages 16 and 19, who also lived in the house, were questioned and released yesterday. TV news reports said that the city's Department of Human Services had investigated the family in 2007 but had closed the case after the girl's injuries appeared not to be suspicious.

DHS Commissioner Anne Marie Ambrose said in a written statement yesterday: "I am deeply saddened by the tragic death . . . [A]s the facts of this case become known to DHS, we will have lots of work to do in looking at the recent events that could have led to or have prevented this tragedy."

Domingo Ferreira had been working for about four years as an independent driver for High Class Limousine, on Wyoming Avenue near C Street, a block from the family's home.

Company owner Yolanda Deliz-Arroyo said that Ferreira was "always a happy person" and an "excellent" worker. "We're shocked with what happened," she said at her office yesterday.

The Ferreiras would have parties at their two-story house, which was clean with nice furniture and a nice entertainment system, she said.

She said that whenever she saw Charlenni, the girl appeared to be "sick" and "always quiet."

"She would always be in her own little world," Deliz-Arroyo said. "She would say hello. She smiled. [But] I never saw her active." Charlenni moved as if she had "like a limping problem."

She said that Domingo Ferreira was from the Dominican Republic and had returned a few days ago from that country.

Dozens of Feltonville residents gathered for a somber vigil outside the Ferreira house last night.

Candles and pink "Snow White" balloons adorned a small table, and a white placard a few feet away reminded people to bring flowers and stuffed animals.

The memorial was made all the more sad when it became clear that many of those in attendance had no memories or personal stories of Charlenni to share.

"It's terrible. Nobody knew her, or her family, for that matter," said Angie McClain, who lives a few doors away from the Ferreiras.

"If we knew that DHS had been investigating them, we could've looked after her."

Some neighbors said that Charlenni had come to the city about five years ago from Puerto Rico, where her biological mother is believed to be now. It was not clear if Domingo Ferreira had previously also lived in Puerto Rico.

Ricardo Rodriguez, who lives next door to the Ferreiras, said he was shocked when he learned of the allegations against the girl's parents.

"They were like a normal family," he said.

"One time I asked about her, and they said she just got sick. They didn't say anything else about it."

Wanda Torres, 37, who lived next door and whose porch abutted Ferreira's, said that Charlenni appeared to be happy, but that things had seemed to change during the last year.

"She was walking funny," Torres said, adding that she didn't see the girl outside often. She said that she would speak with the stepmother and that she appeared to be a good person.

But if the allegations of abuse are correct, "let God punish her," Torres said. "A woman like her, that was the devil in the body of the angel."
