Persephone's Masquerade

The costumes, the music, the people, and We had the time of our lives! It's 3:30 in morning now and I am finally getting the chance to update and post photos. The weekend started out in typical fashion. We start out with the best of intentions of planning outfits and making sure we have them done way before we need them. Friday night found us furiously sewing into the wee hours of the morning to finish up. Finally got on the road at 1pm saturday afternoon, which was a rather nice day compared to drive home in the driving wind and rain. Got to the hotel at about 4pm. For the last few years this event has been held at the Washington DC/Silver Spring Hilton. Our room was rather small but very nice. It was decided months ago that we would be getting a room, since the last thing we wanted to do was have a good time into the wee hours of the morning then have to get back into the car for the 2 hour trip back. Secondary decision being that driving in a fully boned corset is next to impossible. Spent the next few hours relaxing and getting ready. Nothing screams fashion more than standing against a wall with a knee in your back having your waist cinched down to 18 inches. As she was lacing me into my corset, she would occasionally ask me if I could still breath, if I said yes, she yanked harder. Only problem I encountered was my hair. My hair, which as a mind of it's own, was having nothing to do with the elaborate hairstyle I had planned. Arrived at the ball a little after 7, got our table assignment and entered. The evenings first band was already playing, Dragonsong, an excellent band if anyone gets a chance to go see them. Coming from out of town we were virtual strangers but everyone greeted us as if we were all old friends and we were made to feel very welcome there. We started to worry a little bit as the time for serving dinner was getting closer, the place was filling up fast and we were still sitting at a table by ourselves. I got up to go get another drink, and when I returned I was delighted to see that our tablemates were the members of Dragonsong. During dinner, our entertainment was the bellydancing troupe Romka, who specialize in tribal fusion bellydancing. After dinner, there was a silent auction, a live auction, and dancing to the band Ten Feet Tall, they were good but we would much rather have heard Dragonsong again. We met a lot of wonderful people and had a lot of great conversations, spending most of our time talking to people from a group called Shadowgrove. The most ironic part of the evening for me involved my gown and mask. I received a lot of compliments on my gown. I saw many unique and elaborate masks, but for some reason people seemed utterly facinated by my mask. It was nothing more than shaped lace, but people kept coming up to me and telling me how unique and beautiful it was and asking me how I made it. I will admit that I seriously slacked in the picture taking department. I was having such a good time that I kept forgetting to grab my camera off the table to take pictures. I do have a few more coming that were taken By Missy, including one of a gentleman named Dan, who insisted we take his picture, wearing my mask. We got back to the room and got some much needed sleep. Our treat to ourselves in the morning was room service breakfast in bed, then it was time to get back to reality. We didn't look forward to checking out since it was raining cats and dogs and other assorted small farm animals outside. The trip wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, and we even planned our outfits for next year on the trip back. The first thing I did when I got back was sleep, lol. I was so exausted that I sat down on the couch at 5pm and the next thing I knew it was after midnight. I feel a lot better than I did before. Before I went I was so exausted from working 50 to 60 hours a week, and emotionally exausted from dealing with other issues in my life. I now feel a lot better after having been exposed to all that positive energy and all those wonderful people. I also think that I just needed to get out of town and away from this place, even if it was just for 24 hours. If anyone is interested and gets the chance, check out the Open Hearth Foundation, the organization who hosted the event. It was to raise money for their Pagan community center and online resource center. A most excellent group indeed. Until next time..............
