The house of the inner self is not always a place of peace. It can also be a place of turmoil and struggle. One of the things with which we constantly grapple is how to sustain our resolve to continue to do what is right. We are all aware of forces within us which pull us away from the good. And within ourselves we can nurture desires which ultimately will be destructive.
What remians hidden, kept in the dark, incommunicable can easily become a destructive force always ready to explode in unexpected moments. What is kept in our inner thoughts finally becomes a part of our being.
While with great effort we may be able to bring these unwholesome thoughts under control, we frequently need to walk to the road of humility by opening this part of our life to another person or family members. We then need the help of a trusted friend who cares in ways that go deeper than our public persona. This friend must be able to hear the story of our turmoil and extend to us grace, forgiveness, acceptance, understanding, and peace. If we find this kind of friend..we are lucky.
It is not easy to integrate the outer self and the inner self. we often tend to deny the inner self.Yet we must begin to hear its tale and listen to its pain and disappointments. Integrating the two sides of the self will mean that both have to chnage. The story of strength will thus begin to reflect new hope. success and pain, strength and fragility thus weave a new pattern of being that paradoxically does not diminish us but makes us more sensitive and thus stronger persons.
It´s essential then to have a trusted friend whose willing to hear our inner stories..our success and disappointments..our joys and tears..our journeys and halts..our living and dying..and our love and rejections.
