Saturday afternooon i was walking home from work about 6pm on west genesee st, i saw this house with smoke pouring from the window out of the first floor apartment. There was a fan blowing smoke out so i thought everything was ok, i thought to myself keep walking everything should be fine. Something told me to turn around and check. So i did i walked up to the apartment building and walked inside. I knocked as hard as i could on the apt with the smoke but no answer, i kept hearing a smoke detector going off,at this point i knew something was wrong. I didnt have a cell phone so i started running up and down the stairs of the apartment building knocking on everyones door to see if they had a phone to call 911. No answer form anyone. I then ran next door to the local day spa but they were closed so i continnued to the barber shop but they were closed. I then ran down to the apt building and i seen a woman and a man pointing at the window and they asked me when i reached them if everything was ok. I stated that i didnt know i was just walking home form work and i seen smoke so i stopped to see what was up. She said try yelling inside the window, i told her i already did that twice, she then said try looking as best you can inside the windwo, so there was a small hole inside the screen window so i opened it up and looked inside. I saw someones legs laying on a bed not moving, i then yelled back to the man and woman that there was someone inside not moving. I rushed back in and set my ipod and ciggerates down and the man followed suit. I was about to kick the door in when i tried the handle first, to my luck it was unlocked. There was the guy sound asleep inside the apt breathing in heavy black smoke. I ran over to him and started nudging him to wake up, and then i started shouting at him to wake up that his apt was on fire. He came to about 30 seconds later and sat right up looking dazed, me and the other man helped this guy up and out the door to outside. At this point a police officer had shown up and no sooner had the fire dept came and got everything under control. There were no flames, it was just a pan of food burning on the stove but the smoke was filling the apt. Im glad i said to myself to go and check and not just walk home, i dont know what would of happened if i were to walk away. And that was how i saved a life yesterday, and i feel pretty good about it.
