Well, it's Thanksgiving time again. What am I thankful for? Whole bunch of things that would really take too long to list. Let me tell you a little story about something I'm NOT thankful for...

Last night, while wrapping up my night on the fu and trying to help my mom prepare for cooking the heavenly smelling turkey in the kitchen, everything went to hell. There was a argument between myself and one of my best friends, which is not the main part of my story, but it made me sad nonetheless. I hope we can resolve it soon and I hope we both have a fantastic Thanksgiving. No, my story is really about my family. Well, rather, about one side of my family. About how those closest to you are always the ones that hurt you the most. At least, that's what I had to remind my mom of while she cried on my shoulder.

There are very few of you here on the fu that know what's happening within my family. My brother, who is very intelligent, but can sometimes be the most dumbshit kid in the world, is going into the Navy whenever the next recruitment period is. He is also getting married on the 6th of December AND has just told us recently that his fiance is pregnant. Well, what I didn't know was my mom had told my brother to wait until AFTER Thanksgiving to tell her side of the family. (They're telling my grandma on my dad's side today at dinner.) Well, last night he went against her wishes and decided to tell my aunt. WHat my darling brother didn't know was that she was visiting my grandpa and grandma, who has just moved to Utah. Now, my grandpa is an asshole, to put it plainly. But, no matter what type of guy he is, he is still my mom's father. There are just deep roots of love in that fact. At least, for my mom there is.

Anyway, my grandpa had been drinking last night (or, at least I hope he was for the rant he went on). When my brother told him the news about his fiance being pregnant, his reaction was pretty much along the lines of "congratulations you stupid fucking idiot." Loving grandfather, right? It gets even better. Somehow that turned him onto a rant about how my mom and her family (my dad, my brother, and myself) are a bunch of ingrates who never say thank you for anything. We're an ungrateful, no good bunch of people.

A part of me is in shock and disbelief. The othe part wants to call up my grandpa and give him a piece of my mind on the subject. (There is a reason why my dad doesn't like my grandpa and merely tolerates him, but there are just too many stories to go into.)

Anyway, how this whole situation came to my attention...

My brother came home kinda red eyed and a bit sullen. So being me, I asked if he was alright. "Not really," was his reply. So he told me about how his finace is telling everyone in her family and how mom didn't want him telling anyone in our family until after Thanksgiving. I guess he felt left out, whatever. So he told a smaller version of what happened. I got the full version when I went into the kitchen to see if my mom needed help.

I walk into the kitchen and I see my mom, very red-eyed and I can tell she ws trying to control her emotions. She then told my everything my brother had, but in the detail I wrote about earlier. She cried on my shoulder a fair amount and I couldn't help but cry a little myself. She talked about how she agrees with my dad about how her dad is an ass, but he's her father, her one and only father. How could he do something like this? She said she didn't know why she was so upset, and I reminded her of something that I learned from her: that those closest to you often make the most upset. She gave a sharp laugh and cried a bit more.

It's curious how sometimes the roles are reversed in families.
