CAT permanently cuts over 2,000 workers
It's not clear how many of the more than 2,000 laid-off Caterpillar employees will be permanently cut from the Decatur workforce.
Caterpillar says it's started notifying 2,500 employees of the permanent layoffs, but the company wouldn't provide a breakdown of their locations. 550 other workers will be brought back to work by the end of 2010. The world's largest maker of mining and construction equipment has struggled with lower demand since the world economy deteriorated late last year. It responded by dramatically cutting production and laying-off thousands of workers.
CAT has cut 16% of its workforce, which now stands at just above 94,000.
