I'm nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there's a pair of us — don't tell!
They'd banish us, you know.
How dreary to be somebody!
How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
To an admiring bog!
We grow accustomed to the Dark
When Light is put away
As when the Neighbor holds the Lamp
To witness her Good bye
A Moment- We uncertain step
For newness of the night
Then- fit our Vision to the Dark
And meet the Road- erect
And so of larger- Darknesses
Those Evenings of the Brain
When not a Moon disclose a sign
Or Star- come out- within
The Bravest- grope a little
And sometimes hit a Tree
Directly in the Forehead
But as they learn to see
Either the Darkness alters
Or something in the sight
Adjusts itself to Midnight
And Life steps almost straight.
