Hampden Township, Dauphin County - Donald Carnes and two of his friends were killed during a car crash on Clark's Valley Road last Friday. Today, Carnes was laid to rest.
Hundreds were there as Donald received a hero's salute. A Life Lion helicopter pilot bowed to the fire engine holding Donald's ashes. During the service at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, friends remembered Donald as a kid who wanted to help people and a prankster with a heart of gold.
Donald was better known as "Duck". He grew up in foster care and many who knew him say he had finally found what he was looking for: family, friends, and faith.
"We will take a part of him in our hearts to every fire, every crash, every emergency, and we'll just carry him with us," said Susquehanna Township Fire Marshal George Drees.
Carnes loved horses, so his ashes were appropriately spread over a local horse pasture. A funeral for Corey Gauker, another junior firefighter killed in the accident, will be held Thursday.
