After finalizing a $10 million, two-year contract with Kevin Correia on Thursday, general manager Terry Ryan acknowledged theres no guarantee the right-hander will strengthen the group. Ryan said hes still looking for candidates after casting a wide net at last weeks winter meetings. "Anybody who represented a starting pitcher, I think we talked to that agent, and that was quite a few," Ryan said. "They were coming out of our suite in a rapid-fire fashion." The 32-year-old Correia was an All-Star in 2011 with Pittsburgh. He went 12-11 with a 4.21 ERA, 46 walks and only 89 strikeouts in 171 innings this year, losing his spot in the rotation when the Pirates traded for Wandy Rodriguez. Correias best season came in 2009, his first of two with San Diego, when he went 12-11 with a 3.91 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 198 innings and 33 starts. "He knows what hes doing on the mound. Hes a guy weve seen quite a bit," Ryan said. "When you start cracking his numbers, theyre very respectable." Correia, primarily a reliever with San Francisco at the beginning of his career, has pitched in parts of 10 major league seasons. He will make $4.5 million next year and $5.5 million in 2014, his first time in the American League. Correia said hes enjoyed pitching on young staffs with the Padres and Pirates, part of the reason he was attracted to the Twins. Minneapolis was the only major league city he hadnt been to, until now. "Thats fun for me to see, seeing guys progress and get better. I think with the guys we have we can surprise some people. "But this guys been around long enough, where I dont think thats going to affect him," Ryan said. Ryan also noted Correias low strikeout figures, particularly in the last two years, realizing theres some risk in this investment. "When I was younger, I was concerned about ERA and strikeouts and those kinds of things, but the past few years Ive been worrying about one thing, and thats winning baseball games," he said. If I need a strikeout, I think I have that capability, but I dont put a ton of stock of seeing how many guys I can strike out." This is the type of pitch-to-contact and rely-on-defence starter the Twins have had success with in the past but have struggled with recently. After seasons of 99 and 96 losses, the organization has begun to steer away from that mould, acquiring top prospects Alex Meyer and Trevor May in separate trades during the last two weeks with Washington and Philadelphia. But those moves are more for 2015 than 2013, so Ryan still needed to find some experience on the market. Twins starters went 39-75 with a 5.40 ERA last year, ahead of only Colorado. After adding right-hander Vance Worley in the deal with the Phillies that forced the Twins to give up centre fielder Ben Revere, they appear to have three-fifths of the rotation filled, with left-hander Scott Diamond the only returner assured of a spot. "It took 12 games to figure out it was just the socks?" Gonzalez asked. Chipper Jones suggested some timely hits also played a role. Jason Heyward homered and scored three runs and the Atlanta Braves snapped a string of 16 straight losses on Mondays, including 12 this season, by beating the Miami Marlins 8-2 on Monday night. Starting pitcher Tommy Hanson was the only Atlanta player or coach who did not wear high socks in an old-school fashion attempt to end the Monday curse. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Curtis Martin was decked out in a Jets green tie and shoes, looking sharp as ever on another big day for the Hall of Fame running back. The Jets retired his No. 28 jersey at halftime of New Yorks season-opening game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Martin, inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last month, joined three of the biggest names in franchise history -- Joe Namath (No. 12), Don Maynard (13), who were both in attendance, and Joe Klecko (73) -- as the only players to receive the prestigious honour. Martin was also joined at midfield by former Jets teammates Ray Mickens, Victor Green and Fred Baxter. "Words cant express it," a smiling Martin said before the game. "I almost feel just like the Hall of Fame. Theres a part of this thats almost even bigger than the Hall of Fame because its the hometown, the crowd I played in front of for all these years." The whole idea had Martin pretty excited, something he said usually wouldnt happen for him until he ran out of the tunnel before a game. "I never even thought I would come close to anything like this," Martin said, "so Im just so excited, so humbled and so appreciative." The 39-year-old Martin played his first three NFL seasons with New England before signing with New York in 1998. He is fourth on the NFLs career rushing list with 14,101 yards, but has always thought his reputation for being one of the classiest players in the game while he was playing was most important. "I think my legacy starts with me as a man," he said. "I try to read all the fan mail as much as possible, and its rare that someone talks about a game that I played or a run that I had. Most of the people tell me that about the impact that I had on their lives, how I inspired them to do something better or more in their lives. And thats what I want my legacy to be. I want to be known as the man more so than the football player." Martin had one of the most heartfelt speeches during his Hall of Fame induction in Canton, Ohio, bringing many in the crowd of 12,100 to tears as he spoke of the hardships he and his mother, Rochella, endured while he grew up in the Pittsburgh area. The former running back said he met an 8-year-old boy the next day at an autograph signing, and he tried to tell Martin how moved he was by the speech. According to a report, Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask was forced to leave a Czech League game with a groin injury. WASHINGTON -- Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo says third baseman Ryan Zimmerman had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder and is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
