Holi is a festival of colours celebrated by millions all over the globe. Originally distinguished as a festival to celebrate the good harvest and fertility of Mother Earth, this has come to be recognised with the traditional story of Prahlad and his tyrant father, Hiranyakashyap. On the festival’s eve, there is a tradition of gathering around a huge bonfire, which reflects the pyre of Prahalad’s evil aunt Holika, who holds the credit for the naming of this festival as ‘Holi’. Like Dussehra, this festival also marks the victory of good over evil.

Apart from the mythological and traditional implication, Holi holds high social significance too as many non-Hindus all around the country joyously celebrate it with everyone. There are slight deviations in the festivities according to the different regions due to the diverse traditional stories associated with its commemoration. This helps in strengthening the social bonds among people and brings various social groups together in mutual merriment.  The next day is the called Dulhendi, and is the day people play with colours. There is a conventional saying in India that even the enemies get back together on Holi, forgetting about their previous differences in the spirit of goodwill and unity.

Celebrating Holi in India is fun indeed, but the natives who have migrated to other parts of the world also have equal chances to rejoice with their friends and family. Thanks to the many Indian restaurants in UAE, it is easier to get hands on delicious Indian cuisine in Dubai nowadays, than it was a decade ago. Many families who have chosen to settle in the famous ‘City of Gold’ as it is commonly referred to as in most parts of the world.
