can you trust car auctions?

I am supposed to go to a car auction this tuesday. It is open to the public, and will be the first time i ever gone. I have been told you can find some real good deals there but it is buy as is. You can check the vehicles out before the auction except you can not start them up or drive, so you have no idea if the vehicle runs. IM worried ill just be throwing my money away for a vehicle that cant move. Anyone here with experience at car auctions and can share some insight if i should do it and what to expect?
