The Witches broom - commonly known as the besom -is the calling card of a Witch. Many Witches keep a besom on the front porch of their house as a powerful protection device and to let other Witches know who they are. Others keep a besom just inside of the front door of the house. The besom can be used interchangeably with the wand in Circle. It really shines during the Imbolc Ritual when we sweep away the old (winter) to make room for the new (spring).
The besom, like most other tools of the Craft, is easy to make. You can make yours as plain or fancy as you like. All you need is a good straight tree branch for a handle and a bundle of herb branches to tie on one end. If you want something special, visit your local arts and crafts store. They usually offer a variety of scented brooms and keep heather twigs in stock.
When consecrating your besom, use the same ritual as for the wand. It should go without saying that the besom is never used to sweep the floor or anything physical.
