What's The Difference?

Hardly a day goes by that I am not asked about the differences in our tradition and the hundreds of others out there on the web. It is, at once, a very simple and a very complex answer. In reality, it really all depends upon your perspective and the kind of answer you are looking for. Let me start by stating that, what we refer to as traditional witchcraft, the Old Ways, "The Craft" or Elder Craft, is not Wicca. I find that many are often highly offended when I tell them that we are not Wiccan. Because we have been known for centuries as witches and Wiccans call themselves witches, does not mean that we are the same. When someone tells me they are a witch, the first question that I ask is, "might I know your Mother"? More often than not, the answer is, "what do you mean?" I have no animosity toward Wiccan's or anybody else for that matter. I have studied a number of different traditions and was very electic for many years. I still believe that all paths to Deity are valid. So in my comments, I mean no disrespect to anyone. Some of my favorite people are Wiccans and I gladly stand in circle with them as my brothers and sisters. They have their beliefs and we have ours. Neither is right or wrong. The Old Faith and Wicca are simply different things. First of all, ours is an oral tradition that has been handed down over many generations. I believe that the misnomer is that "oral" means that one person sat down and taught a single student everything in a semi-formal lesson plan. This simply isn't how it works. The term "oral tradition" means that the heart of the belief system is passed from generation to generation through the stories, myths and legends that each family uses to illustrate the lessons of life to its young. To our ancestors there was no separation between the mundane and spiritual life and even more importantly, no separation between this world and what is described as the Otherworld. They recognized that we are all part of a whole. The land was sacred and all life was sacred, as well. With a firm knowledge of life beyond death, there was no fear or superstitions about death. Everything was viewed in cycles and each thing related to another. If you meditate on these principles, you may come to glimpse the mindset that existed and the ways and reasons those things were done the way they were. The ancient Irish, all the way up to modern times, did not write down instructions, formulas, and other "how to's" for the next generation to follow. These things are preserved in stories and in an oral tradition that likely, from their point of view, could be carried to the next phase of life in their heads, but not if they relied upon books for their resources. Their interaction with the world around them was, from our point of view, highly spiritual in their approach to everything. Because there was no separation, there was no "mundane". Ritual was a way of life. There was a ritualized way to milk cows and a ritualized way to plant seeds and a ritualized way to build a stone wall and a ritualized way to cook food. These daily rituals kept them constantly in-tuned with their world and connected to the spirit of the land. They recognized the "magic" of the elements and worked with their physical attributes in a way that acknowledged their power and respected their ability to both construct and destroy. They understood that metals, water, rocks and other natural elements of the land all had their own individual energies. They knew where magnetic power centers were and how to access the natural portholes to the otherworld. This was part of everyday life and the oral traditions we part of the everyday teaching that was done as father taught his son how to care for the cattle and how women taught their daughters about spinning and food storage. There are songs and poetry and stories about each of these activities that carry forward the ancient knowledge from one generation to another. What is now called "magical" was simply life in its triplicity, played out in the natural evolution of existence in a world where intervention by and communication with the Gods was normal and expected. In our Family, we have coined a term to teach and instruct those who come to us seeking knowledge. We call it L.T.T.L. or "Look To The Language". There is a great deal to be learned from the ancient Irish language. Slight twists of meaning and blatant descriptions within the language point the way to supporting a great deal of our beliefs and practices. One such example is the meaning of the four directions. East means, in front of me. South means, to my right. West means, behind me or furthest from the door. North means, to my left or the wrong way. This describes the way one should go and the way to avoid. The big differences between us and the neo-pagans are: We do not live by the Wiccan Rede or the Law of Three. We do not appear before our Goddess skyclad. We do not write or copy books of Spells and rituals. We do not sell our wisdom and knowledge in paperback books. We do not make public displays of ourselves or our powers. What do we do? We bless and we curse. We heal and we kill. We honor and we serve. We are a people unto ourselves for it matters not who it is that does the work; it only matters that the work is done. Spirituality is part of the nature of traditional witches however, religion rarely is a factor. Personal growth, personal responsibility and personal duty are our motive. Honor is our creed and service is our path. Whether a traditional witch is from a family who can trace their roots back 5 centuries or 5 generations is of little consequence. Some families have broken links because many have left their homeland and transferred to another continent only to pick up the tradition again years later when the call comes, the blood is stirred and the need arises. It is by our deeds that we are known. That you personally know us is totally irrelevant. Many traditional witches have explored the new age of public identity. We have, in the hopes of enlightening the bright spirits of a new generation, explored the possibility of sharing some of the old knowledge directly. Most retreat right back into their lives of anonymity because of what they see happening in the pagan community. The most basic principles upon which the old ways are founded are exploited by the profiteers, perverted by the ignorant and slandered by the young. Until the next generation learns to respect their teachers, honor their elders and preserve the heritage, there is little that will be revealed except to the few exceptional students who are clever enough to see with more than eyes, hear with more than ears and understand with more than their intellect. There are vast differences between the witches of the old ways and those who have adopted the identity without even so much as a passing thought to what it means to call yourself a witch. In my own family, the term witch was never used. It however, did not change the simple fact that the one who walks the path is; the one who seeks the path is yet to be.

The Besom

The Witches broom - commonly known as the besom -is the calling card of a Witch. Many Witches keep a besom on the front porch of their house as a powerful protection device and to let other Witches know who they are. Others keep a besom just inside of the front door of the house. The besom can be used interchangeably with the wand in Circle. It really shines during the Imbolc Ritual when we sweep away the old (winter) to make room for the new (spring). The besom, like most other tools of the Craft, is easy to make. You can make yours as plain or fancy as you like. All you need is a good straight tree branch for a handle and a bundle of herb branches to tie on one end. If you want something special, visit your local arts and crafts store. They usually offer a variety of scented brooms and keep heather twigs in stock. When consecrating your besom, use the same ritual as for the wand. It should go without saying that the besom is never used to sweep the floor or anything physical.

Pendulums

Pendulums Pendulums can be made of different materials, some people using a simple necklace with a crystal or charm at the end. Be sure the bobber - or weight on the end - is not too light or too heavy. It should weigh less than have an ounce. The best shape for the weight - or point - is something that comes to a point. The best length for the pendulum is six inches. You can make your pendulum or buy one. Pendulums are a simple way to communicate with the other side. I have seen people in stores use them to select products such as: books, food, clothing, just about anything. The most common types of pendulums are: - a crystal tied with wire then suspended on a chain or cord - a chain necklace with some kind of charm suspended at the bottom - a chain with metal pointer at the bottom - these are usual store bought - the human body How To Use A Pendulum Once you select your pendulum you are ready to begin. Sit down and get comfortable. Your mind and body should feel relaxed with no stress. You can rest your elbow on a table in front of you allow the pendulum to swing free, or you can hold your arm in a horizontal position, again allowing your pendulum to swing freely. You do not have to be psychic to use a pendulum. It will guide itself. It is moved by either your thoughts or someone in spirit who works through you, generally your spirit guide. The first step is to get the feel of the pendulum and how it will move for you. Pendulums movements: - straight line - side to side or front and back - circles - clockwise or counterclockwise - elliptical motion - some pendulums bob up and down to indicate strong action, usually affirmative Most questions asked when using a pendulum have Yes or No answers. You must determine the direction your pendulum will take for Yes and for No. Hold the pendulum in your hand. With the other hand - touch the point/bobber to steady its motion. Keep your eyes on the point. Now address the pendulum and say, "Show me 'Yes'." It will soon swing in one direction, which could be side to side, back and forth, or circles. Now say, "Show me No." It should swing in the opposite direction. Be certain the pendulum is not being guided by the movement of your hand or fingers. Once you have determine the pattern for Yes and No - you are ready to begin. There are times that the answer is unknown - or the spirit needs more information. At that time - the pendulum will generally swing diagonally or not at all. The faster the movement - the stronger the energies. Sometimes a pendulum will appear to bob or dance up and down. This is usually an affirmative response. the point is sometimes called a bobber. There are generally no rituals involve with pendulum use, though some people hold their pendulum in the palm of their hand before they begin, to 'charge' it. When you ask your questions you may want to record the answers. Now you are ready to begin to ask your questions. Start with something simple such as, "Is it sunny today?" "Is it Monday?" "Are you here to answer my questions?" Once you get the 'swing' of it - you can move on to personal questions. Remember to only ask a question ONCE. If you want more information - you might want to use a chart. At this time the pendulum should be about two inches above the chart - or as is comfortable. If the motion of your pendulum increases - or the circles get large - the energy is increasing and you can expect change linked to the question you were asking. Pursue further questions to get additional information. CHARTS You can create your own chart. Charts can say anything - including the words Yes and No. They can have pictures, maps, symbols, or the alphabet, used to spell out words much like a ouija board. You can even use your pendulum over a ouija board as it has letters and often numbers on it. Always remember - no matter how you use this tool - if the information you receive becomes negative - you must STOP! Pendulums and Chakras Stand in front of, or directly behind, the person you are working with. Place the pendulum directly over their crown chakra [top of head]. It will either swing back and forth or side to side - or in circles. Next place the pendulum in front of the third eye [forehead]. If the chakra is balanced the pendulum will swing in the opposite direction of the crown chakra, or the circles will be reversed. Continue with each chakra moving downward in order: throat, solar plexus, spleen, and root. If a chakra is balanced the pendulum will continue to reverse polarities. If it is out of balance the pendulum will swing in the wrong direction - or not at all You can also use the pendulum by placing it slowly a few inches away from a person's body. The point should remain still and move when it locates a problem.

Witches Ladder

The use of Witches ladders in knot magick dates back to the Paleolithic age, making it one of the oldest items in the Witches toolbox. In primordial Spellcraft, the Witches ladder was basically a piece of twine or leather with 40 knots tied on it. A Witch would chant a Spell while visualizing it happening in her mind. At the end of each incantation, she would tie a knot in the ladder. It was believed that a Witch could kill a person by repeating a Spell 40 times and tying 40 knots. The only way to break the death Spell was to find the ladder and untie the knots. Today, the Witches ladder is usually made of beads instead of knots and is used in much the same way as a catholic rosary. It is devised for counting incantations without diverting ones attention away from the Spell. Witches ladders are also hung up over beds or doorways as a powerful protective amulet. A good Witches ladder is essential to any Witch seriously into Spellcraft. Easy to make and affordable to buy, no Witch should be without one. As with all Tools, when you find one that feels special to you, do not consider the price. Brightest Blessings, Dionysus

Making A Witches Bottle

A witches’ bottle is an ancient protection spell of great power. This is my version. I would recommend that anyone who is pursuing a magickal path make one to protect against any thought-forms, entities, spirits, demons, or simply negative energies that are bound to be encountered along the way. After charging, the bottle becomes an energetic trap for any force that intends to cause you harm. It is aligned to your energy-field through the use of your own DNA as well as symbolic powers that imprison and then transform harmful energy into something useful. Items Used: a small to medium sized jar or bottle (a large spice bottle works well) sage, or other purifying herb such as rosemary a black candle sea salt parchment paper (or other “nice” stationary) dragon’s blood ink rusty nails, broken glass, needles, other sharp objects dead bugs, some of your favorite food nicely molding, other “gross” things some of your hair, finger or toenail clippings some of your semen or menstrual blood some of your urine a handful of earth, or potting soil a black cotton cloth Perform this spell alone at night. On a night before the dark moon (women will need to adjust the timing to coincide with their menstrual cycle) gather your items together to perform this spell. Ground and center. Mark a circle on the ground around you with the sea salt, moving clockwise beginning and ending in the North. Burn your herb as an incense and allow the smoke to waft over you and your area. Hold the bottle over the smoke and make sure that some gets inside it. Light the black candle saying: “From the darkness I conjure light from the light I summon force, from the force I invoke the power to trap that which intends me harm.” On the parchment write the following with Dragon’s Blood Ink: Your full name (your magickal name will do if you identify with it.) Your birthdate. (Month, day, year, and time if possible) The symbol for your astrological sun, moon, and rising signs. Any other symbol that you feel represents the real “you”. Now smear some of your semen or menstrual blood onto the paper. Draw a circle around the whole thing and draw a pentagram over it, feeling that to do so is an act of power; that when the star is completed you have erected a field of protection around you. Roll up the parchment and place inside the bottle. Now begin to fill the bottle with the other items: your hair and clippings, nails, glass, bugs, etc. You will want to fill the bottle about halfway. Say: “Insects from beneath a rock, needles, nails rusting fast,, Keep all harm inside and locked, within this dungeon made of glass.” Now fill the jar as far as possible with your urine, which is from your body in the act of release. This will provide a link for the energy to follow into the jar and remain. Add the handful of earth, feeling it’s connection to the planet and it’s ability to transform waste into fertility. Add three pinches of sea salt to the mixture. Cork the bottle or attach the lid and seal the edges with drippings from the black candle. Hold the bottle in both hands before you and in front of the candlelight so that the light shines through the bottle. Feel the power of the candle permeate your bottle, charging it with power and purpose. Say: “I charge you, bottle, to trap all harm. Keep me safe away from danger. Inside darkness calls to darkness, to be carried below into the grave.” Take three deep breaths and exhale all your stress, worry, doubt fear, pain, etc. into the bottle. On the last breath “hear” the power in your breath ring and resonate with the bottle. Wrap the bottle carefully in the black cloth and open your circle in the normal way. Go outside to bury the bottle in a place where it will not be disturbed. Should the bottle ever be disturbed or broken, rest assured that the negativity will not then return to you as it has already been neutralized by the salt and the handful of earth, but the bottle will cease functioning. If you end up burying it in a place that you cannot check up on its well-being, you then may want to perform this spell at different intervals, perhaps once a year on a certain date. This of course is up to you.

Candle Magick

One of the simplest of magical arts which comes under the heading of natural magick is candle burning. It is simple because it employs little ritual and few ceremonial artifacts. The theatrical props of candle magick can be purchased at any department store and its rituals can be practiced in any sitting room or bedroom. Most of us have performed our first act of candle magick by the time we are two years old. Blowing out the tiny candles on our first birthday cake and making a wish is pure magick. This childhood custom is based on the three magickal principals of concentration, will power and visualization. In simple terms, the child who wants his wish to come true has to concentrate (blow out the candles), visualize the end result (make a wish) and hope that it will come true (will power). The size and shape of the candles you use is unimportant, although highly decorative, extra large, or unusually shaped candles will not be suitable as these may create distractions when the Witch wants to concentrate on the important work in hand. Most Witches prefer to use candles of standard or uniform size if possible. Those which are sold in different colors for domestic use are ideal. The candles you use for any type of magickal use should be virgin, that is unused. Under no circumstances use a candle which has already adorned a dinner table or been used as a bedroom candle or night-light. There is a very good occult reason for not using anything but virgin materials in magick. Vibrations picked up by secondhand materials or equipment may disturb your workings and negate their effectiveness. Some Witches who are artistically inclined prefer to make their own candles for ritual and magickal use. This is a very practical exercise because not only does it impregnate the candle with your own personal vibrations, but the mere act of making your own candle is magickally potent. Specialist shops sell candle wax and molds together with wicks, perfumes, and other equipment. Once you have purchased or made your ritual candle it has to be oiled or 'dressed' before burning. The purpose of dressing the candle is to establish a psychic link between it and the Witch through a primal sensory experience. By physically touching the candle during the dressing procedure, you are charging it with our own personal vibrations and also concentrating the desire of your magickal act into the wax. The candle is becoming an extension of the Witches mental power and life energy. When you dress a candle for magickal use, imagine that it is a psychic magnet with a North and a South pole. Rub the oil into the candle beginning at the top or North end and work downwards to the half-way point. Always brush in the same direction downwards. This process is then repeated by beginning at the bottom or south end and working up to the middle. The best type of oils to use for dressing candles are natural ones which can be obtained quite easily. Some occult suppliers will provide candle magic oils with exotic names. If the Witch does not want to use these, she can select suitable oils or perfumes from her own sources. The oils soluble perfumes sold by craft shops for inclusion in candles can be recommended. The candles you use can be colored in accordance with the following magickal uses: White- spirituality and peace. Red- health, energy, strength, courage, sexual potency. Pink- love affection and romance. Yellow- intellectualism, imagination, memory and creativity Green- fertility, abundance, good luck and harmony Blue-inspiration, occult wisdom, protection and devotion Purple- material wealth, higher psychic ability, spiritual power and idealism Silver- clairvoyance, inspiration, astral energy and intuition Orange- ambition. career matters and the law. If you wanted to use candle magick for healing, you would select a red candle to burn. To pass an exam, burn a yellow candle, to gain esoteric knowledge burn a blue candle or for material gain, burn a purple one. It is obvious these colors relate to the signs of the zodiac and the planetary forces. The simplest form of candle magick is to write down the objective of your ritual on a virgin piece of paper. You can use color paper which matches the candle. Write your petition on the paper using a magickal alphabet, such as theban, enochian, malachain, etc. As you write down what you want to accomplish through candle magic-- a new job, healing for a friend, a change of residence, a new love affair, etc.-- visualize your dream coming true. Visualize the circumstances under which you might be offered a new job, imagine your employer telling you that your salary has been increased or conjure up a vision of your perfect love partner. When you have completed writing down your petition, carefully fold up the paper in a deliberately slow fashion. Place the end of the folded paper in the candle flame and set light to it. As you do this concentrate once more on what you want from life. When you have completed your ritual, allow the candle to have completely burned away. You do not need to stay with the candle after the ritual, but make sure that is safe and that red-hot wax will not cause damage or fire. Never re-use a candle which has been lit in any magickal ritual. It should only be used in that ritual and then allowed to burn away or be disposed of afterwards. If you are conducting a magickal ritual which involves two people (e.g. an absent healing for a person some distance away) then the second person can be symbolically represented during the ritual by another candle. All you need to do is find out the subject's birth date and burn the appropriate candle for that zodiacal sign. These are as follows- ARIES red TAURUS green GEMINI yellow CANCER silver LEO orange VIRGO yellow LIBRA pink SCORPIO red SAGITARIUS purple CAPRICORN (black) AQUARIUS (all colors) PISCES mauve
