What are you waiting for?

We know there’s nothing worse than when you go through airport security screening, and set off the walk-through metal detector, not once, twice, but three times and then have your hand luggage searched for a pair of scissors.

Here are some tips to help you proceed through screening with as little fuss as possible.

The walk through metal detector

  1. Remove your shoes. Unless you are wearing rubber thongs, your shoes are likely to have metal in them—most shoes have metal under the arch that support your foot, and these can sometime have enough metal in them to set off the metal detector.
  2. Remove heavy watches and/or jewellery. Heavy watches and jewellery often set off the walk-through metal detector.  We suggest you secure your jewellery in your carry-on bag or in our dedicated jewellery container to be x-rayed.
  3. Remove your belt. Some belts have heavy belt buckles or are studded.  Either of these is likely to set off the walk-through metal detector.  It can be easier just to take off your belt before you walk through.
  4. Empty your pockets.  Lose change, mobile phone and keys are all culprits for setting off the walk through metal detector.  Save yourself time, check and empty your pockets before you walk through the metal detector.
  5. Advise the security staff if you have a pace maker or have had a joint replacement.  If you have a pace maker, you should not proceed through the walk through metal detector, but instead, be ushered through and be manually patted down.  If you have had a joint replacement, you will be asked to proceed through the walk through metal detector, which will alarm, you will then be manually patted down.

If at any time when passing through the walk through metal detector the alarm does sound, the guard will simply ask you to remove any metal objects and place them on the trays provided.  You will then be asked to walk through the metal detector a second time.

The x-raying of hand luggage

  1. Remove any aerosol cans from your carry-on luggage.  This enables the security guards to quickly check that the can has a lid or a lock to stop it from accidently spraying during the flight.
  2. Remove any notebook computers from your carry-on luggage.  This provides the guards a clear view of your computer as it is x-rayed.

Bonus tip

  1. Check your bags for any forgotten items that may be classified as ‘prohibited’, and remove them prior to entering screening.  This will save you time while you and the guard search your bag for the item and will save the item from being disposed of.

By following these simple tips as you enter the screening area, your chances of experiencing a smooth security process is very high.
