Radiohead, Counting Crows, Pearl Jam, REM, The Cure, Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Postal Service, The Shins, Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Led Zepplen, The Beatles, and Dave Mathews Band provide a good start. From there, think of bands that resemble the above in style/archtype/whatnot. The only type of music I really don't like in country. Yes, that means I even occasionally get in the mood for Rap and/or Techno. However, note those two can get quite annoying VERY easily and should be prescribed only in small amounts in a tightly controlled enviornment... they're the morophine of music!
