A person living in a city 30 years ago could expect to view around 2000 advertisements per day, today that figure has risen to 5000. With the Internet providing ever multiplying aggregates of information, we viewers can choose where and when we get our media. So a new problem is posed for advertisers; now that our viewing habits have become so 'scattershot' they can't count on the same high audience by advertising on the same mainstream media channels.This change has propelled a new form of advertising - Urban Spam. The idea is to sell your product from every blank space in the city, on underground turnstiles, airline trays, coffee cups, pavements and rubbish bins.
You can view PSFK's video on Urban Spam here. I couldn't help laughing at the surprising ingenuity of some of the ads, especially the Durex condom, printed on the textured concrete at a pedestrian crossing!
