Sizzle in a sari

At the stroke of 1 a.m. when the world sleeps, Dolly Jain wakes up to drape a sari. “I have a mannequin at my place which is always ready in a blouse and petticoat. And, at weird hours, (“I don’t work during the usual hours that people work”) I take a fabric and start draping. Suppose, the drape falls well, I take a picture and that’s a new drape,” exults the celebrity sari draper. At Singhanias store on Road No. 1, Banjara Hills, it is a unique showcase by Dolly Jain, who sits pretty in her stunning pink sari accentuated with jewellery. “We have got models here and we will be showcasing how draping it differently can uplift a sari,” she points out.

Isn’t it an unusual profession to be a sari draper? “It is unusual only because everyone takes a sari for granted,” states Dolly. When she got married, a sari was the only outfit she was allowed to wear! “I said ‘ok. If this is the only outfit I have to wear then let me wear it in a stylish way. And, I am a complete cotton person. I have never worn georgette, crepe, chiffon, silk or blends. I like to wear only handloom,” she recalls. Dolly has been a sari draper for almost a decade and says it is not her profession which is difficult but convincing youngsters to wear sari is a challenge. “It is tough to tell the young generation that sari draping is an art. A major section of young girls have completely stopped wearing saris. We should give them a different drape style so that they are encouraged to wear saris,” she says and adds, “Don’t tell them ‘You have to wear a sari over a petticoat.’ Give them options of wearing it over jeans, leggings or let them wear it over a long skirt and cropped top. The moment you tell them that you have to wear a blouse and petticoat, they say ‘no’,” she says with a smile.

Dolly gives credits to her celebrity clients for understanding the art of draping. “Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen, Diya Mirza and Lara Dutta and young actresses like Sonam Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor have all been thorough professionals, who understand the value of art,” she avers.

Any favourites among her clients? “Each client is different so is draping because of their figure, their tastes and the kind of skin they want to show. Not everybody is comfortable with the amount of skin that is showed,” she shares. Besides being part of the 100-sari pact, Dolly is also a judge of ‘Dare to drape’ on the social media. “When youngsters say ‘Why a sari’ I ask them, “Why not a sari? Maharani Laxmi Bai fought a battle wearing a sari. Are you going to fight a battle? It is all in the head. Sari is the only silhouette which gives the wearer a liberty to look the way you want to look,” she concludes.

Purple reign: Michelle Heaton is belle of the ball in a stunning violet bodice dress at the 21st Anniversary Pink Ribbon Ball

She is a brave campaigner for breast cancer after undergoing a double mastectomy, and Michelle Heaton pulled out all the stops to look incredible in a purple bodice dress at the 21st Anniversary Pink Ribbon Ball.

The Liberty X singer, 36, went for all out glam squeezing her svelte figure into the stunning frock with black and white lace detail on the bust on Saturday night.

The mum-of-two was certainly the belle of the ball turning heads in her elegant ensemble at the annual event in London to raise awareness of breast cancer.

Michelle looked flawless in her deep purple dress which showed off her perfectly toned arms.

Her raven locks were softly curled and tumbled down her back and shoulders.

She chose delicate drop earrings and a matching silver necklace to accessorize her look, as well as a silver bracelet to offset her stunning wedding ring.

Michelle ramped up her wow factor when it came to her make-up.

Stronger: Michelle Heaton cosies up to hubby Hugh Hanley who has supported her through her decision to have a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery

She looked sultry with a smokey-eye and bold lashes, and used a frosted pink lipstick to perfect her pout.

Michelle joined a host of stars at the event including host Kate Thornton, and pop group Bastille.

TV presenter Kate Thornton opted for old school glam in her stunning floor-length black ball gown with intricate lace detail on the arms and bust.

Band Bastille also joined the celebrations as the stars got together to raise awareness of breast cancer at the 21st Anniversary Pink Ribbon Ball in London.

Michelle has long been a campaigner for breast cancer after she underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

The mother-of-two, who has a three-year-old daughter and a baby son with her husband Hugh Hanley, was diagnosed with a mutated BRCA2 gene in 2012.

She was told that she had an 80 per cent chance of developing breast cancer and a 30 per cent chance of developing ovarian cancer and ultimately decided to go under the knife.

She underwent a life-saving mastectomy in February 2015 and is well on her way to getting back to work following her final radiotherapy treatment.

The Big Reunion star was the picture of health when she sat down with Lorraine Kelly on her ITV show to speak about her post-surgery struggles earlier this year.

The former Liberty X singer looked body-confident as she lifted the lid on her insecurities and how she came to terms with her new body following the operation.

Speaking to The Sun, Michelle revealed: 'I never fathomed getting cancer in those areas again. You almost feel like you're bionic.

'I know to be vigilant and not mess around and to always keep checking because you can never get rid of all the tissue.'

Michele has since credited her family and partner Hugh Hanley for standing by her through her personal battle.

Amy Childs slips into an elegant pencil dress as she hits out at 'disrespectful' Bradley Wright after kicking him out of her home

She was left heartbroken when it emerged her long-term boyfriend, Bradley Wright, had sent a series of racy texts to another woman.

And Amy Childs lashed out at her beau as she appeared on ITV1's Lorraine show on Wednesday morning, admitting she felt 'upset and angry' at the 'disrespect' he had shown her.

Although Amy, 25, and Bradley, 25, are still officially an item, the former TOWIE star explained she 'can't have him around' the Essex home they share together, and has even thrown away all of his belongings.

Speaking to host Lorraine Kelly, she said: 'I have been let down again. I am so upset and angry.

'We love each other but I can’t have him around right now. I feel stressed and he has made me feel bad about myself. I’ve moved him out the house and chucked all his stuff out.

'Clothes, trainers - they’ve all gone. I asked him to take them all away and he has. He is heartbroken but he needs to realise what he has done to me and I can’t have him around right now.'

In spite of her devastation, Amy - who has been dating the ground-worker for over a year - is dealing with the situation by keeping busy and seeking solace in her pet pooch, Leo.

Promoting her new book 100% Me on the show, she explained: 'I'm a strong person. Every day, I try to keep myself really busy.

'It's great keeping busy because it really takes my mind off of what's happened. And, of course, I have my dog Leo.

'I love that dog more than anything. Dogs never let you down.'

Things will get better: She flashed a coy smile as she used the early morning TV appearance to promote her book while also speak openly about her tormented love life

During her candid appearance on the daytime show, the reality star certainly showed her man what he was missing.

Putting on a brave face as she arrived at the ITV studios in central London, Amy showcased her incredible figure in an elegant, form-fitting pencil dress.

The beautician injected a welcome bolt of colour to her chic cream and black ensemble with a bright fuchsia around the middle of her dress, while throwing on a black leather jacket to protect herself from the autumnal chill.

Amy added height to her frame with a pair of nude patent stiletto heels by Christian Louboutin as she proudly held her latest tome in front of her.

The redhead wore her glossy locks teased into a bouncy blow-dry and wore heavy make-up as she grinned away for the cameras.

In spite of the dramas in her personal life, Amy has been excited abut the release of her book on social media.

100% Me tells the star's fans her secrets on how she amassed a fortune since leaving TOWIE in 2011, building a fashion empire and owning several properties.

Last month, it was revealed Bradley had sent a series of racy snaps to 36-year-old Marie Asemota, who he met through dating website Plenty Of Fish.

But the ground worker insisted they were just banter and denied ever cheating on his long-term girlfriend.

After throwing Bradley out of their Essex home, Amy admitted she was 'emotionally drained' and struggling to even eat.

In an interview with new! magazine, she said: 'At first I was angry, but now I am emotionally drained. I haven't been eating and my belly has been aching from all the anxiety.

'The other night I woke up at half one and couldn’t get back to sleep until half five. I just feel so stressed. I’ve been crying for the past four days but I need to keep focused.'

Bradley said of the incident: 'She wouldn’t stop messaging me. It was all dirty talk. I showed a mate and we thought we’d have a laugh with her as she constantly called us.

'[Amy] obviously wasn't happy. She thinks I'm stupid but she knows I wouldn't cheat. She's just more angry that I've put myself in this position...

'It's just stress she doesn't need... It was a silly thing to do... I've begged for her forgiveness.... I feel like I've let Amy down.'

Hermès SS16 show report Paris Fashion Week

How to follow a debut? For her second show, French designer Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski had grappled further with the codes of Hermès ready-to-wear and her understanding of it.

“Where to start? This was a very big collection. And there’s a lot to work with,” she told me backstage. She was talking, of course, about the 14 métiers at her disposal, from the jewel-makers ready to make the enormous resin necklaces to the leather-makers who had finessed a more relaxed drop “H” bag.

This being ready-to-wear, though, Vanhee-Cybulski had decided then to make her research personal, and had found her emotional connection to the clothes by examining the sportier themes in the archive — especially those from the 1930s. For SS16 she had dressed down classic Hermès looks with a more dynamic spirit. Cue lots of sneakers.

“I thought about when you leave the gym and throw on a beautiful leather coat over your gym wear and with your gym shoes,” she said of her leisure-focused looks. A swimsuit as eveningwear? “Why not?!” Vanhee-Cybulski had paired an off-white and midnight one-piece with a long pleated waistcoat and “banana trousers” in cotton silk. And it worked. A sporty jumpsuit was transformed in chestnut smooth leather. Racer-back gowns were immaculate in pale double-faced linen — like the chicest of tennis dresses. Luxury and leisure: the ultimate expression of the moneyed elite.

There was another little side-note here: a silk pleat dress printed in the Hermès ex-libris scarf print and interspersed with suede. After the handwritten store-address prints at Lanvin and the logos at Loewe, I wondered if this was branding, Hermès-style? “I prefer not to use the word ‘branding’ about a house like Hermès,” said Vanhee-Cybulski with graceful understatement. “I prefer to say I am working with the icons of the house.”

Brownlow red carpet 2015

Canes, WAG turns and luscious manhair – that was weird

The Brownlow red carpet is a blood sport played at the speed of a bowls game, and experience is the thing that separates the red carpet posers and pretenders from the star WAGs.

A star WAG knows:

Not to arrive too early, or too late. Arrive in the middle of the event, when the big names are there.

Make sure your man is a step ahead of you. The risk of clumsy feet ripping a trail of silk needs to be carefully managed.

Execute the WAG turn – back to camera, neck turned. Power pose.

Have a story. A local designer, perhaps. Or a dress that had to be applied to your skin by soldering iron.

On all fronts, Queen WAG Rebecca Judd led from the front. But this was her 11th and possibly final Brownlow, leaving a leadership vacuum. Who will fill it? My colleague Ebony Bowden suggests it could be Ruby Keddy, partner of Callan Ward:

Dane Swan and Taylor Wilson

Image: pink bridesmaid dresses

But perhaps it's time to stop for a moment and objectify the menfolk.

Pity poor Nat Fyfe. Crippled by a sharp kick to the shins, he hobbled across the red carpet, cane in hand.

"It was this or a moon boot," he explained, apologetic, telling the host broadcaster that he "felt like a bit of a goose". On social media the Willy Wonka jokes flowed like his blond locks in the Perth breeze.

And speaking of that hair. What a flowing mane it was, starting small, then curling out, before rushing to fall from nape to shoulder like a tumbling Niagara Falls.

Best hair? He had some stiff competition from Callan Ward, who appeared to have taken his entire haircut and pushed it back, a reverse rainbow emanating from his scalp thanks to a generous helping from the gel pot.

Perhaps this year's dominant man-trend, if we can call it that, was the emergence of the pocket-square. Spotted or black, hidden or on flamboyant display, the boys let their pockets do the talking.

Gary Ablett was a particular exponent this year. And a total professional, working the media arrayed along the carpet's length like a politician works a rope line. He told jokes, posed for selfies, and was universally beloved.

Among the professionals though, you have to pay homage to Dane Swan. It is a bold man who can match pocket square to nose ring to WAG.

The other thing that is striking about a footballer, close up, is their size. Aaron Sandilands, predictably, towers. I said to him "you're really tall", and immediately felt bad about it because he knows that and I'm sure everyone says it to him all the time.

Putting heart into fashion

Perhaps calling Bibi Russell only a fashion designer would be inadequate. Familiar to fashion acolytes across the globe, Bibi’s practice, rooted in her native Bangladesh, speaks strongly also of her social commitment to empower the weavers and craftspeople of her strife-ridden country.

The first woman from Bangladesh to study at the London College of Fashion, she later became a super-model and ramp favourite for the likes of Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Armani, to name a few. In 1994, Bibi quit her international modelling career and relocated to Bangladesh to start Bibi Productions – Fashion for Development, her label. She has since worked tirelessly for the promotion and survival of indigenous art and craft practices, created jobs in Bangladesh, and instilled a sense of pride in the country’s products. Excerpts from an interview:

Your work is often labelled as quirky. Is this an attempt to stereotype alternative fashion?

I make world clothing that exemplifies the global village mindset. I design ready-to-wear clothes. Ultimately, I combine fashion with traditional craftsmanship; aid empowerment and commitment. My collection is made exclusively of handmade fabrics, crafts, rickshaw art and recycled products. This is what I have always aspired to do and I hold this fashion with a consciousness close to my heart. Call it whatever you like.

Your comments on ‘Fashion for Development’, which has been your lifelong agenda.

‘Fashion for Development’ is a profound statement that has a fundamental importance for the craftspeople and weavers of Bangladesh and all over the world. This is why I became a designer. It was launched in 1996 at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, supported by the former Director-General of UNESCO, Mr. Federico Mayor, and the Queen of Spain. ‘Fashion for Development’ works for the survival of humanity, a lift-up in human dignity, and the efforts can transform the future of innumerable artisans, triggering significant opportunities in the rural economy of the developing countries.

It is about using culture and creativity to eradicate poverty. We are not doing charity — that’s demeaning. I am amazed by the talent of weavers and craftspeople in the villages of Bangladesh. It has been my effort to empower them through their produce, to instil a sense of conviction and pride in their skills and importantly, economic independence. Also, it is a way of life that I have embraced and not mere sloganeering... Everything I wear is made by my villager friends in Bangladesh.

Designer Bibi Russell.

Your practice as a designer is rooted in the textile traditions of your country, but created primarily for a western clientele…

I am living my dream of saving indigenous craftspeople and practices. I want to ensure their socio-economic development. Their children should have access to healthcare and education. We have more than 160 million people in Bangladesh. It is important to sell these products in the local market too and I make sure that happens. Similarly, success and recognition in the global market is paramount. My designs and colours for the global market are different from what I sell in Bangladesh.

Your detractors might say you became an international icon because the West loves to patronise indigenous art and fashion from Third World countries…

International icon? I am glad to hear that! I am on a mission and the journey so far has not been easy. There is so much to be done, but I will persevere. I derive satisfaction from what I do. My co-workers in the villages love me unconditionally and that is my greatest asset.

Has Bangladesh embraced your fashion?

Of course! My people have been supportive. It has been a challenge, but gradually there is more acceptance for my designs in the local markets.

Do you also work with Indian crafts?

With pleasure. I do a lot of work in many places in India and I salute the Indian artisans who have magical fingers. I am currently working in parts of Rajasthan and Assam.

Your products are recycled from newspaper, flour packets etc.

For seven years, I have been making products out of recycled material. I made recycled fabrics out of silk and cotton wastage. Furniture out of recycled plastic and bangles from recycled silk yarn. Every week I am engaged in developing new products from waste material.

Rickshaw art is an integral part of your fashion design. How did this happen?

I love rickshaw art. Do you know that my rickshaw art products (trays, bindis and spectacles) are best sellers? These artists are geniuses. They never went to an art institution or received any formal training. Since childhood, I have been fascinated by rickshaw art. It has served as a major inspiration. In fact, I was convinced that the artists could overcome financial hardships through art. I always wanted to work with them and it has organically integrated into my practice.

Your favourite fashion icon?

Rabindranath Tagore, undoubtedly.

You are a voracious reader. What are you reading currently?

Wings of Fire, Abdul Kalam's autobiography. I have immense respect for him.

David Beckham on his new short fashion film: 'I'm not launching an acting career'

1. Tat-watch

In person, the tattoos on Beckham’s arms are so plentiful, they seem less like bodily adornments and more like under-sleeves to his outfit. Which was otherwise very simple: dark grey T-shirt, black jeans, lush and towering quiff of hair. It worked.

2. Comportment

The hand-shaking, cheek-kissing, eye-contact-holding manners on this man are really quite something. Becks for president?

3. The film

It’s a 15-minute-long black-and-white melodrama, shot in Mexico, featuring circus performers, snakes, tarot cards and men in day-of-the-dead-style face paint, with a raspy Spanish voiceover whispering things like: “You are the moth to her flame.” Beckham plays the circus’s daredevil bike rider – complete with handsome Belstaff jackets – and eventually helps rescue the star performer (Katherine Waterston) from her possessive boss (Harvey Keitel).

David Beckham at La Bodega Negra for the premiere for his Belstaff Films, Outlaws

Image: vintage bridesmaid dresses uk

4. Nerves

Beckham’s first reaction when the idea was mooted was, “a) I can’t act; and b) I would be very nervous doing that,” he says. But director Geremy Jasper manged to convince him he could pull it off. (As did Harvey Keitel, who sent a huge bunch of lilies to his trailer on the first day with a note saying: “It takes a man to give another man flowers.”)

5. Strong and silent

The film’s big inspiration, says Jasper, was Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy in which Clint Eastwood is “a man of few words but many squints”, he says. “So I thought that would be the perfect role for David. It’s a big undertaking to have the camera on you like that, to carry a film. So if he plays this stranger, this mysterious figure, who is always watching then it makes it a little easier. He’s got a good face to watch.” Sure enough, Beckham doesn’t emit a peep, but he emotes pretty strongly via raised eyebrows and soulful stares.

5. Acting

Contrary to recent reports, Beckham says this isn’t the beginning of an acting career. His friend Guy Ritchie “has asked me to be in a couple of things – which I do as fun because I know he’s not going to make me look silly. And I really trust him [which is why I did] The Man from UNCLE and King Arthur. But [acting] is not something I’m looking to go into even though people have said I’m launching my acting career. I’m not, it’s just been a lot of fun and something I’ve really enjoyed.” Shame.

6. Victoria’s view

One critic has already given her view of the film – Beckham’s wife. “She was really impressed,” David says. “But she’s biased.”

Celebrity Stylist Anita Patrickson Talks Dressing Julianne Hough And Ariel Winter For Primetime Emmys Red Carpet

Before the 2015 awards season comes to a close, the hottest celebrities in prime-time television will walk the red carpet at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles Sunday night for the 67th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. International Business Times caught up with celebrity stylist Anita Patrickson, who dished on dressing dancer, singer and actress Julianne Hough and “Modern Family” actress Ariel Winter for the big night.

Patrickson revealed that while she sometimes pulls together red carpet looks months before the event, she wanted to check out New York Fashion Week, which ended Sept. 17, to see what ideas she could gather. “At the end of the season you feel like you’ve exhausted all of the options, so it’s nice to have a kind of fresh start,” Patrickson told IBT. “Hopefully, we can find something kind of fun on the runway for Emmys.”

Image: wedding dresses 2014

Even though the world won’t see Hough’s finished red carpet look until Sunday evening, the Los Angeles-based Patrickson teased that she wanted to do something different from the white DSquared2 gown the "Dancing With the Stars" judge wore at last year’s Emmys (photo below). “We did white last year, and she just got engaged, so we probably won’t do white this year, but we’re pretty open,” Patrickson said. “Every year, we’ve done something quite different for the Emmys.”

As for Winter’s red carpet look, Patrickson said she wanted to find something a little more mature for the almost-18-year-old actress. “Last year she did something a little sleeker,” Patrickson said, referring to Winter’s crop top Black Halo Eve gown (photo below). “I’m trying to get her away from being a teenager. [She’s at that age] when you’re kind of grown-up, but also she’s so young and fresh and gorgeous.”

“I’ve worked with both these girls so much and for so long that we’re in a pretty good place,” Patrickson added. “Neither of them are too highly strung.” The Texas-born stylist also dished about dressing model Chrissy Teigen in a risqué, high-slit black Marchesa gown for last month’s MTV Video Music Awards.

“Chrissy’s a fun one,” Patrickson said. “[The dress] was a little daring, which was really fun. She’s so great on the carpet, and she’s so confident. She’s really fun to dress. It was very glam ... it was a fun look.”

The city is set to get hotter this weekend. Glamorous models will showcase the best of collections by renowned designers across India at the seventh edition of Volvo Cars Chennai International Fashion Week from September 18 to 20 at Vivanta by Taj Connemara. With a line-up of nine designers, including popular names like city-based Chaitanya Rao, Sanjana Jon from New York and Rocky S from Mumbai, the show is set to spike the city’s glam quotient to new levels, promises Gaurav Sharma, CEO, Storm Fashion Company, which is collaborating with Volvo Cars to organise the show. While Chaitanya has designed for the who’s who of Tamil cinema, and has a boutique in the city, Rocky S, a popular name among Bollywood celebrities, has designed for stars like Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu and John Abraham.

According to Gaurav, this edition is more luxurious than last year’s, with Volvo setting up a specially designed lounge for the show. And to whip up the experience a little, a Mumbai-based rock band, One Night Stand, will be flying down to perform at the venue, he confirms. “Unlike earlier, when their performance was scheduled at the end of the show, this time, they will perform even as the models sashay down the ramp,” he adds. That apart, the event will also see a hair and make-up show by city-based Touchhe Makeover Studio.

Image Source: bridesmaid dresses under 100

Besides the introduction of a few new concepts, what the event really attempts to do is bring in a sense of familiarity for the audience, says fashion editor Shakthi Girish. “If you are watching an episode of a series, you would expect a sense of familiarity with the next one. It’s the same for CIFW. Our focus is to bring out collections that will appeal to the Chennai public,” she adds.

As far as the designers are concerned, Bangalore-based Manoviraj Khosla, who showcased his collection last year, is back with digital-printed and sequence-worked skirts for women, and laser-cut jackets and bandhgalas for men, and Sanjana Jon is presenting her collection symbolising the various roles and energies a woman has, after a year, at the show.

Apart from the big names, the event is also a platform for young designers like Sangeetha M to showcase their talent, chips in Gaurav. Other designers include Hari Anand from Kochi, popular designer Nazia Syed from Chennai and Jules Idi Amin from Chennai.

Drew Barrymore mixes her styles as she wears patterned boho maxi dress with a khaki military coat ahead of TV appearance in London

She is well known for her bohemian sense of style.

So channelling the notion of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', Drew Barrymore cut a beatnik figure in London on Tuesday.

Heading to the ITV studios, the 40-year-old was in good spirits as she waved to cameras as she continued her promotional trail for Miss You Already.

Showing off her stylish wardrobe, Drew wore a black patterned maxi dress with a pair of orange heeled sandals.

Hiding her eyes behind a pair of large shades, Barrymore was well prepared for the weather in the capital as she donned a khaki coat with a military style, cutting a contrast to her free-spirited frock.

Accessorising with a clutch bag, the American actress wore her ombré locks down in free falling waves styled in a centre as she readied her appearance on Loose Women.

On the go: Drew's promotional trail has already seen her in Toronto, New York and France

Image: black bridesmaid dresses uk

Miss You Already sees Drew and co-star Toni Collette portray childhood friends, who remain attached at the hip even in their adult years.

However, Toni's free-spirited character Milly is abruptly faced with a cancer diagnosis, while Drew's character Jess finally finds herself pregnant after various attempts.

Directed by Catherine Hardwicke and written by Morwenna Banks, the comedy drama hits UK cinemas this September.

Meanwhile Drew recently revealed that Charlie's Angels 3 might actually happen.

On Sunday, Barrymore told the Toronto Sun: 'I'm like, "We'd better do this before we’re all in wheelchairs, because that's more of like the Naked Gun version"

'Everyone's life is in a very distinct place, and movies are not the universe of a bunch of people who were involved in making the first two. So it's tricky, but we talk about it very seriously.'
