I actually wasn't going to review this movie. I had very low hopes for it but I'm into the second act now and it's really winning me over. The thing about me is that it takes a lot to get through my barriers. Horror movies don't scare me. Dramas don't tug at my heart strings. Comedies don't make me laugh. There are rare exceptions of course. No Hard Feelings is definitely one of them. I've actually laughed hard a few times.
A word about Jennifer Lawrence. I used to love her. She had such a refreshing, rebellious nature before Hollywood indoctrinated her. Thought she was beautiful too. Not anymore. Why would you get plastic surgery when you're only 35? She looks like she's wearing a mask. Took me awhile to get used to the stoic/plastic look. Anyway, enough JLaw bashing.
So, the basic premise involves breaking a 19-year-old guy (Andrew Barth Feldman) out of his shell. If you follow pop culture commentators at all, you might have heard that Gen Z is socially awkward and more introverted than previous generations. That's basically the source of the humor in this movie. It works.
There's a running theme that focuses on 'Maneater' by Hall & Oates. It's mostly played for laughs. There is one romantic scene where the song plays a significant role. It's touching. I really liked the whole scene.
By the end of the film, both characters have grown and learned some things about themselves. I think some of these later scenes were supposed to be more emotional but I just didn't feel it. I can still recommend it though. The story was interesting and the humor was good. I might even watch this again some day.
