First off, I am ex-army Rangers, 1980-1984.
So, on this Memorial Day, I am going to ask the philosophical question:
Can you justify war?
Now, granted when a country is attacked, it is justified to defend itself against the attackers, but consider the history of mankind.
However;
Mankind has gone to war for land, wealth, religion, power and greed. Whole civilizations has been exterimanted over the last 8000 years.
From Alexander the Great to Adolf Hitler, wars of conquest have been waged.
The crusades were wars in the name of religion, where entire populations of cities in the holy land were put to the sword, men, women and children, muslim, jew and christians. It did not matter to the crusaders.
In the Americas, wars were fought against the Native Americans so that Europeans and people of European Descent could expand from one coast to the other.
So on this day, when we remember the men buried in Arlington, and at every civil war battlefield, the men and women buried at Adobe wells, Apache Pass, Sand Creek, Wounded Knee, the men of the Seventh at Little Big Horn, and countless others who lie in unmarked graves or the bottem of the sea.
Is it not time that we ask the question, can we justify the insanity called war?
Great military commanders have said it on many occassions, and The Duke of Wellington said it best, "There is nothing as meloncholy as a battle lost than a battle won."
And Plato say something in humanity's future when he said, "Only the dead have seen the end to war."
So, is war justified? |
