Death in a digital culture
Regine Debatty at We Make Money Not Art is gathering together a selection of art and media projects which deal with the subject of death in the age of electronic technologies. A project by RCA Interaction Design graduate Michele Gaulers is a particularly compelling investigation of this subject. Digital Remains looks at what becomes of the electronic fingerprint created by an individual after the event of their death.
Today we entrust an ever-expanding proportion of our memories and life experiences to computer hard drives, these digital remains are beginning to constitute a substantial proportion of the legacy we leave for our ancestors.
'Based on data tags and meta data, search algorithms dig through a deceased person's data, presenting us with content that is most likely relevant to us. For instance, a photograph from a holiday we spent with the person 10 years ago, or the person's favorite piece of music which they typically listened to while writing e-mails'
I wonder what your ancestors would make of the mumm comments
