Social Commentary

45,000 people die in automobile related fatalities in the US annually. Doing the math, that’s roughly 120 people a day and that figure has been rounded down in this case. People complain about losing a few thousand lives to a stupid war and they don’t even figure in deaths that would have occurred in a time of peace and would end up being the result of a military accident. Automobile related deaths are stupid and could be easily reduced, but you don’t hear people marching often just to protest this or to gather together to try to fix the problem. Sure there are groups like MADD, but the numbers just don’t add up proportionally for each cause like I personally think that they should. Sometimes people just misplace their interests and efforts, because they’re misinformed, the information has been twisted, or they are just stupid. I don’t mind the people who flock to a cause because it’s within their moral beliefs; but I want them to not just know all the facts, but to live and breathe them so they don’t waste everyone’s time and money on stupid and worthless causes or go around spreading misinformation and causing further harm to what needs to be done like the people in charge of AA do. Alcoholics Anonymous has the same success rate as people who try to stop drinking on their own, 6%, and because of this AA hides its success rate to the best of its ability. If you’re going to do something, make sure it’s worth doing. This means if you’re going to commit to something, put everything that you have behind the cause; get all of the information, know all sides of the story, and recognize other people’s views and if you are trying to persuade them, don’t attack them. Don’t be an ass about it either, if they’re not interested, forcing them to listen is only going to cause them to resent your cause and defeat your purpose. Being respectful and nice will earn you more ears than yelling at them. On a side note; America lives a life of luxury. While we have tragedies once or twice in a half decade, we don’t have daily bus bombings or massive shootings. While I’m not trying to take any significance off of the atrocities that do happen on US soil, I would like to put what does happen here in perspective.
