OK I want your opinion on an email I recently sent to the Senator representing my county. I want to know if you think it was good enough, or should have I just forgotten it. Here goes :
Mr. Minard I am a Corrections Officer at the West Virginia Industrial Home for Youth in Industrial (Salem), WV. I'm concerned over the fact that legislature is not taking our profession serious enough to give us the proper wage we need in order to be competitive with surrounding states. As I'm sure you may be aware, In Virginia starting corrections officers earn between $24,000 and $40,000. In WV C.O.'s only start out at $20,024. I myself am a Corrections Officer II with 2 years on the job, and I, and majority of my co-workers, only make just $22,000. With the constant rise in Insurance costs, the $900for CO I and $1200 for CO II we got 2 years ago, and the 2.5 % (or, when you actualy add it up its $600), barely covers our cost of Insurance. And along with this "2.5%" raise, PEIA is saying the costs are going to go up again. We really need relief! We constantly at my facility have CO's moving out of state or going to the Federal System because of the better pay. Federal System starts you off at a good $10,000-15,000 more a year for an officer with 1 year experience. I'm not saying WV needs to pay us that much at all, but it would be decent to at least have competitive wages with the surrounding state so we can keep our officers here in WV. I know I'm just one person, and you probably get a lot of requests like this. But, I ask you to please push for competitive wages for those of us who risk our lives every day to keep the communities safe from the violent offenders, whether they be juvenile or adult.
Thank you Corrections Officer II M. Rock, West Virginia Industrial Home For Youth, Harrison County. |
