His obituary reads:Mark David Solomon, son of Gloria and the late Allen Solomon, passed away June 6, 2019, after a brief illness. Mark, born June 28, 1956 in Boston, MA, was the first son of Gloria and Allen, the loving brother of Robert and Alison Solomon, and wonderful uncle of Rachel, Bennett and Rebecca Solomon. Mark was born in Boston, MA and lived with his family in many different states before settling here in Birmingham in 1969, and few loved the Magic City more than Mark. He graduated from Rogers Vocational School in 1977, and first worked with Cook Publications in the printing business before a second, much loved career in education. Mark worked in various schools in Jefferson County for almost 30 years, and was treasured by the students and his co-workers alike. Mark had planned to work until he was seventy - not many of us love our jobs the way Mark did! But work was just part of Mark's happy life – he was a movie buff, loved eating out and treasured travel with family. For many years, he served as an usher at Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center and always enjoyed those concerts and shows. Mark never knew a stranger, and was the most egalitarian of men. Everyone he met, he treated as an equal and he assumed the best of everyone. His heart was tremendous, his love unconditional, and the world is a little sadder today without his every-ready smile. But he lived an inspiring life, and leaves behind family and friends who are better people for having known him. There will be a service at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at Ridout's Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood 35209, with a luncheon to follow. The family invites all who knew and loved Mark to join us. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to a charity of your choice.Published in The Birmingham News on June 9, 2019
