MILWAUKEE -- After the Milwaukee Brewers announced contract extensions for general manager Doug Melvin and manager Ron Roenicke on Tuesday, principal owner Mark Attanasio admitted to glancing at a few fan comments questioning why the team would hand out votes of confidence in the teams leadership after such a shaky start to the season. In a way, those lofty fan expectations could be seen as an indication of just how high the Brewers have set the bar under the leadership of Melvin and Roenicke. Before Melvins arrival in 2002, a 12-17 start to the season wouldnt raise many eyebrows for a small-market franchise with humble goals. Now the Brewers expect to contend for a division title and the playoffs every year. And after a slow start, Attanasio said, the levelheaded leadership of Melvin and Roenicke will lead them back to success. "Of course, theres always going to be the fan that says, Well, how could you extend those guys now?" Attanasio said. "Well, its precisely now, precisely when you need calm, thoughtful leadership." Melvins new deal runs through the 2015 season. Roenickes contract will go through 2014 with a club option for 2015. Melvin was under contract through 2012 in Milwaukee after signing an extension in 2008. Roenicke previously was signed through the 2012 season with a club option for 2013. Attanasio noted that Melvin has built a team that made the playoffs two of the past four years; when Melvin took over at the end of the 2002 season, the Brewers were on their way to 56 wins. And Attanasio pointed out that Roenicke led the Brewers to a franchise-record 96 wins in his first year as manager, taking control and setting the right tone. "You have to reward that," Attanasio said. "But more importantly, you want to secure that talent for the organization, for the community, so that we can continue to have success here over the next several seasons." Melvin said his goals when he arrived in Milwaukee were decidedly modest. "When I first took this job, I said my goal was to have a team that was more popular than the sausage race," he said, a reference to the teams well-known on-field entertainment. Melvin and Roenicke were thankful to Attanasio and the team, but both were more concerned about straightening out the Brewers rough start. "Weve still got a lot of things to accomplish, too," Melvin said. "Last year was exciting, but weve got to keep the momentum going and still reach the goals that we want to reach, and thats to bring a championship here." Roenicke said his contract situation wasnt any kind of distraction, but was thankful to have it wrapped up. "Its nice, because my focus needs to be on what were doing here, what were trying to accomplish, and get through this time when were not playing well," Roenicke said. Attanasio sat in on a monthly meeting that included Melvin, Roenicke and other members of the teams front office Tuesday, and noted that the tone wasnt any different than it was when he attended a similar meeting during spring training. "Neither guy gets too high or too low, and thats important now," Attanasio said. "This is a time to be low." Roenicke said the meeting was a chance for everybody in the organization to take a look at the teams position. "We want to make sure that this team is competitive for a long time, not just last year," Roenicke said. "We need to figure out this year, and we need to figure out whats happening in the next few years, and make sure that what were doing, were heading in the right direction." The Brewers lost Prince Fielder to free agency in the off-season, a move they fully expected. What the Brewers didnt expect was a pair of significant knee injuries to everyday players in the first month of the season; first baseman Mat Gamel and shortstop Alex Gonzalez, both of whom are likely to miss the remainder of the season with torn right ACLs. While there isnt a likely big trade coming in the short term, Attanasio said he cant foresee the Brewers becoming a selling team at the trade deadline -- even if he couldnt rule it out completely. "The only circumstance where wed even consider a thing like that is where there was no chance of winning," Attanasio said. "And this teams too good to be in that position." Attanasio called Melvin a "terrific mentor" who has helped him learn the inner workings of the game after he became an owner. "I was a baseball fan, and I played Rotisserie baseball back to 1983 or 84, I was in leagues," Attanasio said. "And then I got to the Major Leagues, as they say, and I found out how much I didnt know. And Doug has been a marvelous mentor from the start, Ive really learned a lot." Reigning NL MVP Ryan Braun said having continuity at the top of the organization was encouraging, and could help the team attract players down the road. "For both those guys, its well-deserved," Braun said. "Im excited to see everybody else has recognized that. Theyve obviously been instrumental in the success weve had to this point, being a smaller, mid-market team and going to the playoffs two of the last four years and finding a way to get three million people to come watch us play every year. Those guys deserve as much credit as anybody thats playing on the field." Wholesale Jerseys USA . Alex Saulnier led the way with two goals and three assists while Allain Saulnier scored twice and set up two more. Dmitri Jaskin and Yannick Veilleux had a goal and two assists each for the Wildcats (15-10-0), who have won seven of their last 10 outings. Wholesale Jerseys . According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the basis of NHLs latest proposal is to reduce the leagues financial demands - believed to be approximately $460 million in the leagues first proposal - overall, including a $120 million reduction in its Year One demands. http://pavansukhdev.org/wholesalejerseys.html . Logano raced to his eighth Nationwide Series victory of the year Friday night, passing Brad Keselowski with eight laps to go after taking on two tires and a splash of gas. Logano led 62 laps en route to his 17th career victory and first at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He has made 18 series starts this season. "I just had to adjust my style a little bit and get this little 20 car rocking and get these guys in victory lane one more time," Logano said. Keselowski gambled by making a quick pit stop with nine laps left and taking on no tires, but his pit crew didnt get enough fuel in his tank and he couldnt challenge for the lead. He finished 18th. Kevin Harvick was second, followed by Nationwide points leader Elliott Sadler. Kyle Busch finished fourth and Denny Hamlin fifth in a competitive race that included 11 Sprint Cup regulars. Austin Dillon, who entered the race third in the standings 25 points behind Sadler, finished sixth and is now 29 points behind. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Brian Scott, James Buescher and Michael Annett rounded out the top 10. Logano questioned his crew chief Adam Stevens about whether it was good idea for the No. 20 Toyota to take on two right side tires when he entered the pits with 15 laps to go. That meant briefly giving up the lead. Even car owner J.D. Gibbs questioned the move. "I was like, Two tires? No, no, no," Gibbs said. "Then (a few minutes later) Im like, OK, good call." Said Logano: "I thought the same thing." Logano said thats why hes the driver, not the crew chief. "Thank God he doesnt listen to me sometimes," Logano said. "Hes smarter thhan me.dddddddddddd He knew how much time two tires were going to pick us up. I wondered why at the time, but he has these things planned out." Logano called Charlotte one of his favourite tracks and was happy to get the monkey off his back here. "For some reason Ive never been fast enough," Logano said. "Ive had top-five cars, but never had a car to win. I think its somewhat myself and making sure I know what to do when the track changes. But I love this place. It was a lot of fun to get a win here." Sadler came in with a nine-point lead over Stenhouse in the Nationwide Series standings. He expanded that edge to 13 after Stenhouses seventh-place finish. Sadler said he wanted to win, but came away happy with the third-place finish. "It was a good run and anytime you gain points, were going to call it a good night," Sadler said. The championship hopes of Sam Hornish Jr. and Justin Allgaier, who were fourth and fifth respectively in the Nationwide Series standings, took a hit when they crashed on lap 13. Hornishs spotter, Chris Osborne, told him hed cleared Allgaier, who was on the outside, when he hadnt. Hornish slid up the track and rammed Allgaier into the wall. "I got cleared and he said, My bad," Hornish said. "Its unfortunate. It was a bad call that cost us tonight. But he doesnt make many mistakes so Ill forgive him. We all make mistakes." With four Nationwide Series races left, Sadler is closing in on a championship. But he views next weeks race at Kansas as crucial. "I think that is the wild card," Sadler said. Danica Patrick finished 11th and was on the lead lap until the very end in one of her better efforts of the season. ' ' '
