Don’t wipe your eyes Red Sox Nation, you’re not dreaming. That really did just happen. What you have just seen was never dreamed to be a reality by any fan, player, coach or manager prior to 2004. Who would have ever thought that they would see not just one but TWO championships in their lifetime won by the Boston Red Sox. What you are witnessing is dream finally come true for Red Sox fans far and wide, what you are seeing is what once was an accomplishment that was never dreamed to become a reality. This championship put to bed all the talk about 2004 being a fluke and having to wait another 86 years for the next ring, try three years.
The 2007 Red Sox have captured the World Series Championship with a full team effort. This took more than 25 guys to raise the second banner in four seasons. It took veteran leadership, it took fantastic starting pitching, this took a relentless offense, it took a lights out bullpen and a tremendous amount of spark from the most talented rookies around was more than enough ingredients to whip up another championship in Boston. Who would have ever thought they’d be able to say that not only have the Red Sox not lost a World Series since 1986 but they haven’t lost a World Series game since 1986.
There is not enough that can be said about this team, I could go on all night about all the key contributors to the success of this team. This was not a team that was “carried” by anyone and that is why they are the champions of baseball. Up and down this lineup and pitching staff you have guys that have been the reason why the Red Sox have won a game this year. You can point to the payroll all you want but tip your caps to the player management who have developed players like Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester who was the winning pitcher of the clinching game and Jonathan Papelbon who blew Seth Smith away to claim a World Series victory.
The 2007 Boston Red Sox have gone above and beyond expectations, they have accomplished so much and proved so many wrong along the way. This is a team that came out of the gates in April and grabbed first place by the throat and never let go on their way to a World Championship. This is a team that won the division for the first time since 1995. This is a team that stormed their way into the American League Championship Series by beating one of the top teams that baseball has to offer. This is a team that stared elimination in the eyes for three straight games and never backed down. That grittiness and determination earned them a spot on baseball’s biggest stage, the World Series.
The Boston Red Sox never gave the Colorado Rockies a chance, this was a one-sided World Series from beginning to end. The Red Sox out-pitched, out-hit, out-fielded, out-ran and simply out-played the Colorado Rockies en route to their seventh championship in franchise history and their second in the past four years. The Red Sox became the first team to win two championships in the twenty-first century. This team battled all year long through ups and downs but by the grace of the Baseball Gods, there were more ups than downs for these guys.
The one down in the postseason for this team was that the longest tenured player for the Red Sox was physically unable to compete in the World Series. Tim Wakefield is the heart and soul of the Red Sox, he does so much for the community and has given so much to this team for over a decade. If it were up to him he would have gone out there and done everything he could to give his team all he had, but in the best interest of the team he made to decision to take himself off the World Series roster due to his inability to compete. Tim, you deserve this championship just as much as any guy on this team, we all admire your dedication and we all thank you.
It is evident that Alex Rodriguez is the runaway candidate for American League MVP, but if you take A-Rod out of the equation how can you not give the American League MVP to Mike Lowell? This man came to Boston considered to be just a “throw in” to the Josh Beckett deal and he has done nothing but exceed all expectations and has become one of the biggest stars on the ballclub. Mike Lowell filled in the number four spot when Manny Ramirez went down in September and batted behind David Ortiz which is not an easy thing to do. Lowell thrived in the number four slot and picked up the slack that Ramirez could not. This team would not be where it is today without the services of Mike Lowell and after the World Series was all said and done, he finally got his recognition. Mike Lowell was named MVP of the 2007 World Series after batting a solid .400 with one home run and driving in four.
You know you’re in good shape when your team is up three games to none and there are multiple candidates for World Series MVP. Where would this team be without Josh Beckett? How many rookies could have a World Series like Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia? How many games would the Red Sox have lost without Jonathan Papelbon coming out of the gate in the ninth inning? Of course Papelbon’s pitching means nothing if the work of Hideki Okajima isn’t perfect. How many runs would not have came across the plate without our captain Jason Varitek, Manny Ramirez or David Ortiz? Kevin Youkilis wasn’t able to perform as much as he would have liked to during the World Series but this guy had one of the most electric postseasons that Boston has ever seen. How about the postseason that JD Drew had while erasing his entire season with the postseason heroics he mustered up for his teammates? You name it, they contributed and that is why they call themselves champions tonight.
The beauty of this championship is that this may be only the beginning of this glorious run the Red Sox are making. All the young guns that are on this team that will be competing for years to come such as Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jonathan Papelbon, Jon Lester. The Rookie of the Year to be, Dustin Pedroia has made a huge impact and let’s not forget that Jacoby Ellsbury who pleaded his case for MVP of the World Series isn’t even a rookie yet. Clay Buchholz made his mark in Red Sox history in’07 and he wasn’t even on the postseason roster. This team is loaded with young weapons that are extremely talented and will shine in a Red Sox uniform for years to come.
So on the fortieth anniversary of the ’67 Impossible Dream, Boston fans all across the world dared to dream an impossible dream once again. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you your two time (in our lifetime) World Champions, the Boston Red Sox.
