DURING THE SAME TIME PERIOD IN 2006, 36 OFFICERS WERE SLAIN. TWENTY-FOUR DEATHS OCCURRED IN THE SOUTH, EIGHT IN THE MIDWEST, SIX IN THE WEST, FIVE IN THE NORTHEAST, AND ONE IN PUERTO RICO. CIRCUMSTANCES INVOLVING THE 44 SLAIN OFFICERS ARE AS FOLLOWS: 11 WERE PERFORMING TRAFFIC PURSUITS/STOPS, EIGHT WERE AMBUSHED, SIX WERE ANSWERING DISTURBANCE CALLS (THREE BEING DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE CALLS), FIVE WERE ATTEMPTING OTHER ARRESTS, FOUR WERE INVESTIGATING SUSPICIOUS PERSONS OR CIRCUMSTANCES, FOUR WERE RESPONDING TO ROBBERY CALLS, TWO WERE INVOLVED IN TACTICAL SITUATIONS, ONE WAS ANSWERING BURGLARY CALL,ONE WAS HANDLING/TRANSPORTING PRISONER, ONE WAS INVESTIGATING DRUG-RELATED MATTER, AND ONE OFFICER WAS SLAIN DURING INVESTIGATIVE ACTIVITY. FIREARMS WERE USED IN 42 OF THE 44 KILLINGS (32 HANDGUNS, SIX RIFLES, AND FOUR SHOTGUNS) AND VEHICLES IN TWO. TWENTY-THREE OFFICERS WERE WEARING PROTECTIVE VESTS. THERE HAVE BEEN 40 SEPARATE INCIDENTS IN WHICH THESE 44 OFFICERS HAVE BEEN SLAIN. ALL 40 INCIDENTS HAVE BEEN CLEARED BY ARREST OR EXCEPTIONAL MEANS. Officer Yarbrough had been patrolling the area as a result of thefts from box-cars in the previous days. While walking near a train, a man stepped from behind a box-car and shot Officer Yarbrough in the stomach. The suspect then fled the scene. He was on patrol with a ride along in a residential area which was under construction when he noticed a suspicious vehicle parked on the street. Unbeknownst to Patrolman Stillman, the suspect had just finished assaulting the woman he had abducted from a nearby gas station. As he approached the vehicle the victim ran to Officer Stillman and the suspect ran into nearby woods. Patrolman Stillman pursued him and apprehended him. Before the suspect was handcuffed a struggle ensued and the suspect gained control of Patrolman Stillman's .38 caliber handgun and shot him twice in the head. The suspect was apprehended the next day and sentenced to life in prison. Patrolman Stillman had been with the agency for seven years and was survived by his expectant wife.
