DALLAS — Dallas police say 27-year-old Khandi Busby threw two of her children from the Jim Miller Road overpass into rush hour traffic on Interstate 30 Wednesday morning. She then leaped 22 feet to the pavement below.
The boys, ages 6 and 8, were rushed to Children's Medical Center for treatment. The 8-year-old was in critical condition at noon Wednesday; the 6-year- old was in good condition.
"Especially with the traffic — the fast-moving traffic out on the freeway this time of the morning in the hours of darkness — it's a miracle that both kids weren't hit directly by a passing car," said Dallas police spokesman Sgt. David Burroughs.
Investigators said Busby stormed out of a car parked at a nearby gas station with the children in tow just before throwing them over the railing of the bridge.
Busby was taken to Baylor University Medical Center, where she was initially reported in critical condition; later upgraded to fair.
"We don't know the reason at this point why she did this," said Dallas police Sgt. Gil Cerda.
Police said Busby does have a criminal record, including felonies, but does not have a history of drug abuse. She may face two counts of attempted murder charges related to this incident, police said.
Child Protective Services took custody of the children and a social worker was with them.
Two hours after the incident, two lanes of I-30 were still blocked to traffic as police continued their investigation.
