One Halloween One chilly, dark Halloween, I knew I was strong enough To stand before you and let you know How you could not hurt me. I hid behind my delusive costume Shivers running down my spine, But not from you. One chilly, dark Halloween, We stood before each other; The emptiness between us Pervaded into my heart, As you openly confessed to me The one thing I dreaded to hear Even though I already knew. One chilly, dark Halloween, She stood beside us too, So unknowing and so trusting, The way that I used to. I don't blame her in the least For 'twasn't very long ago When I stood in her shoes. One chilly, dark Halloween, I became numb inside. Either I had not heard it Or you never said goodbye. On that cold Halloween night I became strong enough to know My unflinching costume was no disguise.
