What are you waiting for?

You hear it occasionally at work, from friends or family, sometimes from kids. For whatever reason, people complaining that a whole month is devoted to black history. I come from a very Irish family. I imagine that I grew up similar to Italian, Greek, German, etc. kids, being taught about the struggles of our previous generations in their trek to America. I was taught that being Irish is something to be very proud of and always felt that sense of pride growing up. Being a teacher for three plus years, I had the opportunity to teach in a very poor community, and about 98% of my students were black. I enjoyed getting to know the kids and grew to get to know quite a few of them very well. Being kids, they loved to try to get me off topic, and they loved when I talked about being Irish. They were very curious to know about who I was in general. Apparently, in the community, the Irish have a reputation for being crazy, and carrying AK-47’s, which I found thoroughly amusing, but I digress. I asked several of my students about THEIR background, if they were African American, from one of the islands, etc. I was amazed at how many of them had no idea. Many did not know one or more of their parents. Having worked with kids, I often have people ask me if I have experienced the lack of respect kids seem to have today. It’s hard to appreciate the knowledge of knowing your background and being taught pride. How can you expect a person to show respect to others when they aren’t taught even to love and respect themselves? Without delving into the horrors of slavery, I do know that one thing that was done was to attempt to strip the slaves of the traditions of their homeland, their HISTORY. While obviously you cannot attribute all the problems of ‘kids today’ to one problem, I do think that a lack of history and pride play a major part.
