What are you waiting for?

A food drive, or food bank, accepts food donations and passes the food out to less fortunate families. Perhaps some of you reading this have lived in a less fortunate home. It's not a happy time, especially around Christmas. The Toronto Sun, a newspaper for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) has an article today with a picture of a little girl holding food planned to be donated. It looks like a sweet thing. It should appear that way, Christmas is the time for giving and this little girl (probably with the money of her parents) was apparently willing to give a lot. Too much, in fact. The smile some people may have from the nice donation pictured on the front page may have, or hopefully has, disappeared soon after reading the article's blurb. This girl's food donation was DENIED. The food was good. Snacks, healthier food. Normal stuff. It was DENIED because the little girl offered TOO MUCH food for a donation. The reason being that it may have made other people feel bad for not being able to donate as much. Fucking ridiculous. When movie stars donate huge donations of money to charities, do people who can offer considerably less feel bad? I don't. I offer what I can because I know every cent is appreciated. It all goes in the same pot at the end of the day. So why can't this girl (probably on behalf of her family in all) offer a little more than the kid in class who's family could only afford a little? So that kid won't cry? We are WAY too sensitive on kids. I'm not saying we need to be inconsiderate, but we need to find a way to make children develop more security in themselves. It's often insecurities that make kids grow up doing extremities just to feel they fit in with others (like cutting themselves to fit in with other emo kids. And NO, I know not all people cut themselves for this reason, but it's a popular one). If we can't sit down with a child who is upset that they or their family could only afford to give a can of beans and explain to the child that someone will appreciate the gesture of giving, what's wrong with us? Are we too lazy to stop and explain? Or have we forgotten how to talk to kids like that now that parents place them in front of the tv or computer far too often? We're not helping them gain a sense of security. I'm writing a letter today to my local paper about this (and other matters). I hope other people feel the need to write letters. It may not change this incident this year, but a disappointed voice echoed by many may make starving families around the world get a little bit more later in life if needed. By no means am I pressuring anyone to write letters. Do what you will. If you're still reading this, at least you took interest enough. But it's Christmas. If you already have a feeling your big turkey dinner (or whatever Christmas dinner you may have) is going to have a considerable amount of left-overs that may even get tossed out in a few days, try to think about a family who isn't going to have food that's been kindly offered to them. Forgive me for seeming to exclude Hanauka and Kwanza or any other celebrations this time of year. This post is meant for all on whatever 'happy' holidays you may be celebrating. Personally, this is the second most depressing holiday I've ever encountered, and it doesn't affect myself. World. Time to wake up. There's more problems than a child's hurt feelings in such a matter. Let those more fortunate offer more if they wish. They are some of the many kinds of HEROES we are lucky to have these days.
