Viola

(There's a pTerry joke there.) I used to play viola, and there aren't that many solo works for the instrument- well, more than one might think, more than for the contrabass euphonium (and the trombone, thanks maybe mostly to Christian Lindberg, is doing well now finally...!), but compared to the violin there really haven't been that many. (Even so, I haven't heard nearly all of them, concertos, sonatas or otherwise!) Just added to my have-listened-to list, anyway, a concerto for two violas and orchestra by Antonin Vranicky/Wranitzky, a Czech ? Bohemian? composer. I'd been editing, working on improving, the Wikipedia article about him, at least adding to the worklist- one can find interesting things by knowing where to look (the Royal Netherlands library has a good collection of microfilms of his works for example, many of which I hadn't heard of from other sources. Nowhere near the size of their huge Carl Czerny collection to repeat a theme ;^) Obsessed much? I love this stuff.) Anyway, as to the quality of the music- very good late classical/early Romantic, nothing sketchy or boring which may be a concern with those not similarly obsessed with the second and third tier composers... (Antonin Vranicky wrote at least one cello concerto, by the way, that really is I am told very well regarded; and his brother Pavel/Paul is slightly better known, is the subject of a recent website and wrote among quite a few other works a few symphonies I've heard, that I was much impressed by :)! ) Now listening to a composer writing for a very rare combination, piano trio and orchestra (Beethoven's the best-known example, but there are others, for instance by Alfredo Casella, and one of the Tcherepnin family; I have on recording, too, one by Benjamin Frankel- who I've mentioned in blogs before for other reasons). This one is by O. Kvech, and reminds me a bit in places of Shostakovich in style anyway? Maybe just the period! A name that brings a chuckle to my punnish ... never mind, so does my name. Neat piece anyway. Eric
