I am a 26-year-old firefighter/ EMT Basic working on Kwajalein Atoll for Chugach Development Corporation. I have been doing this since I was 18 with the military and private contractors. With this education I am hoping to move to a career in Safety. I have been in school since last years spring 05 term. The island is not all that bad for living but it does help develop a sense of character that will enable me to overcome most obstacles in life. To start out understanding me you first must understand about my life. I met a lot of good friends who showed me other parts of life that I never had thought to live until that time.
Mostly I have enjoyed traveling to different places to hunt and fish and sometimes work there. I lived in Okinawa Japan for two years after graduating from the Louis B. Garland Fire Academy. During that time I learned to enjoy the Japanese culture with a passion for the food and the effective way they worked from the smallest task to the largest. Watching them work showed me the value in teamwork and time efficiency.
After leaving Japan I travel to North Carolina to work at New River Marine Corp Air Station where I met people from other walks of life. I learned there that life was harsh and the animals and people did what was needed to survive. I worked on the North Slope for about 6 months and during that time I volunteered my time at the local fire department were I received my emergency medical technician basic training.
After the winter had subdued to moderate warmth I took a job working on Midway Atoll as one of three firefighters there. During my stay there I met many people and again what I noticed was work ethic. One that island working for families across the pacific was a small group of Thai workers. The language barrier was there but in time I worked around it with the help of many of the people. One of those people there changed my life in ways never thought possible.
I had always had a passion for learning foreign languages and customs as a child and in time that allowed me to learn parts of the Thai language and Culture that inspired me to do many things.
With a mortgage and two other people to help support I was in need of a job.
After six weeks of unemployment I was given the opportunity to live and work on Kwajalein Atoll in the South Pacific. So far the experience here has been rewarding and beneficial as it gives me time to study and further my education that I will use in times of need.
