The Power of POWER

Many of you may or may not know this but by day I sell technology. Yes I am a Computer Geek and not afraid of using the technologies I sell. Of course if you think about it, loo0k at some of my toys. I own a Hybrid Car. I have a fairly advanced Wireless network in my house. I was doing Computerized Rock back the 80's (Before it was common). Fast Forward to the TTRS on 2/12/08. We had a fairly bad storm and I was late getting to the studio. The Show started about 15 minutes late. Trish wasn't able to get there due to the snow. Oh boy, flying solo. Everything seemed to be going fairly smoothly. First interview with Jaden went off without a hitch. Massive Mike is on and the connection wasn't the greatest, but it was usable. The Show usually goes till around 10PM – 10:30 depending on the guest. Its now about 9:45 and I start hearing this beep, beep noise. As annoying as it seemed, I kept going. About 10 minutes later, Pam comes into the studio with a flashlight and says, "You realize we have no Power, right?" I look at the main Computers for the show and they are running. The cable Modem is up. The router is up and now the Beep, beep is louder. Aha!! You see, any good network should always be prepared. In case of a Blackout, you should have a UPS in place. That is short for "Uninterruptable Power Supply. This will keep your network up so you can safely shut your computers down in the case of no power. Guess what the beep, beep was. You see the TTRS is so intense we don't have just one UPS, we run off of 3. So while the rest of the place was Pitch Dark we continued to broadcast our show for about 20 minutes without any notice of lack of power. Knowing that time was running out, I decided that I was smart to kill the show now. I tell our guest that due to a power outage, I was going to have to wrap things up. We went till 10:05. I saved all the work. Edited the show and was ready to upload the files to the website when our time ran out and it was all black in the studio,. Fortunately, we were able to save everything and lost no data. Lesson to be learned. You should have your systems on a UPS. The UPS is really for shutting down safely so as to not lose data or corrupt your hard drive from sudden outages. For those playing at home, I have a 1500VA Cyberpower Rack mount, an APC 1500VA Tower and a Cyberpower 1200VA running my studio. We went about 30 or so minutes until complete blackout. Until next time. Vitally yours MT
