A current issue in today’s word is the morning after pill, a method to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex, There are many debates whether the morning after pill should be available over the counter. Numerous questions about post-coital contraception, another name for the morning after pill, have come up what is the morning after pill? How does it work? What are the side effects of the morning after pill. Should the morning after pill be available over the counter? This essay argues that the morning after pill should not be available over the counter because it could result in irresponsible sexual behavior. What is the morning after pill? Emergency contraception pills, as it is also referred as, are for use after a woman has had unprotected sex. These pills are oral pills that a woman takes within seventy-two hours of sexual contact to prevent becoming pregnant. Emergency contraception pills contain the same ingredients as regular birth control pills, but in higher doses. There are two types of morning after pills. One morning pill uses hormones estrogen and progestin. The same hormones used in standard birth control. The other morning after pill uses progestin only. The morning after pill acts to delay ovulation, prevents fertilization, or inhibits implantation by altering the endometrium. Estrogen is a hormone that stimulates females secondary characteristics. Progestin is a steroid hormone produced by the ovary before implantation. The morning after pill is not effective if a woman is pregnant and should not be used to end a pregnancy. Although the morning after pill is very productive, it has some side effects. They include nausea, stomach pains, headaches, tender breasts, and changes in menstrual cycle, and exhaustion. The morning after pill is a method to prevent pregnancy after one engages in unprotected sexual intercourse. The idea of making Plan B, the so called morning after pill, available over the counter in the United States was introduced in 2004. The reporting states that making the morning after pill available over the counter may reduce unwanted pregnancies. There are some people who believe that it should be available to everyone who want it proponents of the morning after pill do not believe that offering it over the counter will promote increased unprotective sex, People believe that if the pill is offered over the counter, it would be easier for women to have access to it and be able to take the pills as soon as possible. Although there are people who are nothing for the morning after pill being available over the counter, there are many who oppose to it. Opponents argue that easier access will lead to increase promiscuity. Some doctors believe that steroid hormones should not be sold over the counter. Also some pharmacists refuse to fill out any prescriptions. Some anti-abortion groups tells as though morning after pills and emergency contraception induce abortion. Christians suggest that a wearing label should notify the users that it may prevent implantation. After many studies, FDA, prohibits the morning after pill over the counter sales. FDA said teenagers might not use the drug safely without the guidance of a doctor. Also FDA, is concern that young girls might not use it safely and that granting over the counter use might lead young women to think that this drug creates no greater threat than any other over the counter drug. This drug is forty times stronger then regular birth control and poses a greater risk of causing dangerous to young women and girls if not taken properly. It can also kill a developed human life. In conclusion, the morning after pill should not be sold over the counter and said by FDA, it will not be sold over the counter. Although the morning after pill is a method to prevent unwanted pregnancy after having unprotected sex, it is not a safe method. It has many side affects that include nausea, stomach pains, headaches, tender breasts, and exhaustion. Morning after pill should not be available over the counter because it could result in irresponsible sexual behavior. It should be distribute only by the doctors. The pill should not be available over the counter because it is much stronger then birth control pills and if not taken properly it can result in death.
