The Butterfly and the Buffalo by Samuel Solomon Once upon a time there was a butterfly named Brooke. Brooke was a beautiful butterfly, with rich, vibrant colors, full of life and beauty, spreading love around the meadows where she took flight, sharing life with all the creatures in the meadow. She was a wonderful soul, with a heart as big as the sky itself. She was adored by those close to her, and her many admirers would quietly watch as she flew by, easily seeing her spectacular colors... One day, as she floated through a valley, she spotted a wonderful creature. As she drew close, she was in awe of his size and strength. She was fascinated with him. He was a buffalo, named Bastion, and they swiftly became friends. He had many qualities that she liked; he was strong, and fast, and powerful. When he spoke, she was captivated by his voice, and he said such sweet things to her. Bastion was fascinated with Brooke as well. She had such beauty, he loved to see her glide by, and fill the air with her wonderful light, that seemed to shine from within. She was strong, but also sensitive, and could feel even slight changes in the flow of the breeze... Brooke and Bastion became inseparable, and before long, they fell in love with each other. She loved his strength, and loved to play and joke with him. He loved her beautiful colors, and how it felt to be around her. They enjoyed the season together, laughing and loving, and romping through the meadows, a wonderful sight to see... and it was good to be alive. One day, as she was flitting around his feet, as they rambled through the meadow, He trampled her. He did not realize what he had done, but strong as she was, she shook herself off, and continued on with him. He really had no idea how much he had hurt her. She didn't want to say anything, she loved him so. She forgave him, and continued by his side in the meadows. But soon, he trampled her again. She was so hurt, she didn't understand why he wasn't more careful with her. But she shook herself off, and continued along the countryside. But as the days passed, he began to trample her, again and again. It was becoming almost daily now, he was hurting her. When she tried to explain, he really didn't understand, he was just being a buffalo, as was his nature. He didn't mean to hurt her, he just didn't seem to know better, how to exist with this butterfly, so different from him. He still loved her and her pretty colors. But then Brooke realized that something else was happening. With each time she was trampled by her beloved companion, her colors were growing more and more dim. The sharp colors that once flashed her light all across the valley were now mostly dull shades of gray. And each time he hurt her, it was a little harder to recover. It was becoming so hard to get back up, and join her love, by his side. She tried to explain to him that he was hurting her, she begged him to stop. But it came out all wrong, and the words that she said to him were hurtful. She didn't understand why it had to be so hard to love him, and why he would not change and take care to stop hurting her. But with each passing day, he trampled her again. And with each passing day, her colors faded, until they were almost gone. Soon, their love seemed to fade as well. He didn't understand his pretty butterfly, but he understood her words that hurt. And now, with her colors faded, she did not seem the same as she was before. He still loved her, but he did not understand why she had changed. He did not realize that his careless trampling was killing her. All he wanted to do was be a simple buffalo, and enjoy the meadows with his butterfly. But he did not know he was damaging her, and causing her colors to fade. And he did not know how to be different, he figured being a buffalo was good enough. Brooke's heart was breaking, with each new hurt. She knew it was too much, and that she could not take much more. She still loved that buffalo, but her heart grew dim, just as her colors did. She knew she could not stay. She was terribly wounded, and terribly sad, when the day came to say goodbye. With tears in her eyes, she told him she had to go, she could not be trampled anymore. He stood stoic, and strong, but his heart was crestfallen. Whatever happened to the pretty butterfly he used to play with? She seemed a distant memory, from the sad, faded creature that she was now. With all the remaining shreds of strength and courage she had left, she kissed him on the nose, one last time, and flew away. She still loved that old buffalo, in a way, but she longed to be the soul she used to be. She had to be the vibrant butterfly she once was, full of joy and life again. She wondered if she ever could be, after being so damaged. But even as she wondered it, as her wings took flight, Her heart, her strength, and the light within her soul, were returning And her colors were already beginning to shine again.
