Well, I had to post a blog about this.. I have been thinking about it for a couple days now... and it has been eating at me.
I took my daughter to see fireworks here in town on the 4th. I heard this little boy ask his Dad why he had to come see the fireworks... and the Dad's response was "It's a tradition" TRADITION?!?!? Why not tell your children what the meaning behind the fireworks are? Then I was watching the news that night, and it about floored me when the news station did a report on how many Americans really knew what we celebrated on Independence Day. Most of the adults had the general idea.. but when it came to the kids.. they were clueless. Why are we as AMERICANS not teaching our children the history of our country and how we gained our freedom. I understand that some children are too young to need to know the specifics.. they are a bit graphic. But in my opinion, I think Americans in general need to start teaching thier children WHY we celebrate Independence Day, what the meaning is behind the fireworks, what the American Flag represtents... and you know everyone says that we have so much freedom... and not one person on that news report could even recite the PREAMBLE to the Constitution. How ridiculous is this? What has this country come to. Do people forget that our children are the future of this country, and they NEED TO KNOW THE HISTORY OF AMERICA!!! It is well proven that history repeats itself. If we don't teach our children our history.. what is to come of our country. Now some may argue that the children learn these things in school.. yes they do learn SOME in school.. but why are we leaving all the teaching to our school systems when we are perfectly capapble of teaching our children these things ourselves? Do people forget the sacrifice of the soldiers that died for the freedom that we now have?
Now maybe I shouldn't call this stupidity so much as I should call it "failure" on the part of some Americans to truly remember the sacrifices that were made, and are made everyday for us to have freedom, for us to have all of the nice things that we do have. I also wonder why is it that we only celebrate our freedom once a year? People are so worried about whining and complaining about the things that go on in this country because things aren't done the way that they want them.. people are so spoiled. I would love for some people to live a day in the life of poeple in Africa, or Russia.. where they have NO freedom.. or maybe right now I should say that people need to see first hand the lives of the citizens in Iraq right now. We are all aware of the general thing that is going on in Iraq right now. But I think that we would appreciate our freedom so much more if we could expierence the things that these people go through daily.
I think I am done venting now..
I really think that some people should think about this though. That is all for now.
