I hope everyone is having a great holiday (or at least a relaxing break, however you want to look at it). And I also hope that you got a lot of good gifts this year. But as I say that, I wonder about this time of year. How we all get so worked up about shopping for the "perfect" gift for so many others. How we set all these high expectations on what we think we're getting in return. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the holiday?
Don't get me wrong, and I'm not trying to take away anybody's joy or bring anybody down, but it seems we have lost the meaning of all of this. The fact that it takes a calendar to tell us when to act kind and be generous to others. The fact that we can only act a certain way at a certain time of year like it's in our genes to only be this way in December. The fact that a lot of us (including me at times, I'm just as guilty of it too), put on this fake front of being so giving and courteous because the time dictates it, but once new year's passes us, we return to that "It's all about me" mode.
And we rack up huge amounts of debt, eat way too much, probably drink too much, re-hash a lot of penned up hate and frustration (usually with family), and become the most selfish, materialistic people ever on earth. And isn't that the total OPPOSITE of what the holiday is about? Don't get me wrong, I have given a lot this year, and feel good about that, especially being able to give so much to my son (who will be too spoiled before it's all said and done with lol), but to not have enough to give to the Salvation Army? Not to have enough time to volunteer at a homeless shelter?
And to be so caught up on things we think are part of the holiday, and lose sight of the things that are essential for the holiday, just confuses me. So if I can say or do anything to at least show I haven't forgot the true meaning of this day, let me just say again to all, MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Whether you're Christian or not, the feeling and meaning of this time of year should be spread. And to think of others besides yourself, is really a good thing for the world.
