I have been told time and place and again
There’s no such thing as love
The love I aspire to
It is an illusion for romantic fools like me
It is better to see
The reality 

But like a fool 
I wear my feelings like an icon
Openly vulnerable
Where this insignia I display
Is often slapped and punched and kicked
Even spat at with unprovoked disdain 
And downright hatred

Romance is the scene
The scene on the stage
And love is the backdrop
And when the curtain falls
The story ends
And I am left with a tattered badge
Wondering who will mend it

I was promised a rainbow
But I got another storm in its place
She promised me love
But I got excuses instead

I was left lost when love was a mirage
