The Last Play

Photobucket - Video and Image HostingFront of Program I just got through doing something that I enjoy doing. I run lights and sound at the local playhouse. We did the Broadway play ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown’. In all our plays, everyone is a volunteer and no one get paid anything. We all do this because we enjoy working with the theatre. Well, except this time, we had to pay the piano player because he is a student at Georgia Southern University and he drove 145 mile round trip three times a week for about 3 weeks. This play music score was so hard none of our local piano players had the time to learn the music. Photobucket - Video and Image HostingThe Director Each director has about 6-8 weeks to get actors and for them to learn their lines before the play is begun. Each play is for two weekends. Our theatre can hold up to 250 people at a time. This play only average about 90 people a night because for some reason people thought this was a children play but it was not. Photobucket - Video and Image HostingPhoto of cast and crew Each night of the play, the director comes on stage and thanks everyone for coming then proceeds to tell about upcoming plays and thank you for people who were not put in the program. Then she asked everyone to please turn off his or her cell phones or pagers. Then we sing God Bless America. We started singing this song in remembrance of 9-11-2001. After the song, the play is started. After the first act, we have a 15 intermission depending on how many women there are at the play. It may be 15 minutes or it could be 30 minutes. It seems most of the women will wait until 10 minutes of the intermission is over before they decide they have to go to the bathroom. Photobucket - Video and Image HostingPage 2 of Program This was our last play for this season. We do four plays a year with a play in March, June, September, and November. Most of the cast and crew live within 30 miles of the theatre but we have had some actors who lived 60 miles one way and drive it 3-4 times a week for a play. We try to have a Children play whenever we can find a director to do such a play. The piano in this scene was bought from a company that has been making these children pianos since 1897. At the end of the last night, we had a drawing where a person who had paid a $1.00 ticket won this piano. We were able to sell enough tickets to pay for this piano. We usually keep all the props but it was decided that we would probably not use this piano again. Since then I have helped in 4 plays a year. Before 1993, I enjoyed going to see plays, ballet, and musicals but would have never thought to become active in one. I started out as a stage hand then stage manager, and when our soundman died of throat cancer I got his job. I also have acted some but mostly 3-5 lines. I have found that I would rather worry about lights burning out or sound tapes messing up then to try to learn lines. Have a beautiful day
