Military advocates vow to fight debt-busting proposals
Some of the budget-cutting ideas from the president's deficit- and debt-busting commission would hit the families and economy of the Fayetteville-Fort Bragg community if they were enacted.
Advocates for soldiers and their families vow to fight many of the proposals.
The ideas include military and federal employee pay freezes, new health insurance fees for military families and retirees, new health insurance fees for the employers of military retirees, and closure of Department of Defense-operated schools for military children.
Another idea would prevent new soldiers from collecting military retirement pensions until they turn 60 instead of around age 40, when many complete 20-year military careers.
The ideas were advanced by chairmen Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson of President Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform.
The 18-person commission is seeking to ways to balance the national budget and cut the national debt. The full commission has a Dec. 1 deadline to issue a report, but the Bowles and Simpson advanced a number of ideas this week.
Their ideas also target numerous non-military programs and call for an end to popular tax breaks that civilians and soldiers have enjoyed. The country has to make sacrifices if it is going to live within its means, the report says.
"America cannot be great if we go broke," says a summary. "Our economy will not grow and our country will not be able to compete without a plan to get this crushing debt burden off our back."

Well first, to be called a Crushing Dept and a Burden to be taken of the backs of the American People is an insult that will not and cannot be borne by any one, let alone a member of the military service. This 18 person Commission was put together by the biggest spending President in history, and he has only had two years in office. This Commission that The commission is supposed to be "bipartisan," but its makeup is decidedly tilted toward liberals thoroughly invested in Mr. Obama's big-government agenda. Mr. Obama gave himself the privilege of picking six of the 18 commission positions. Democrats in Congress get to choose another six, so ultimately, the Democrats get 12 seats, the Republicans get six. Viva "bipartisanship!"
These are the sort of people that love to spend YOUR money, yet in the fervor (read fervor as smoke screen) to cut money these people look first to the only institution in the country that truly represents all people, the US Military. Why do they want to cut money from our budget? Why would they want to take away our health benefits, our retirement and our (military) children’s education? Because the commission is made up of people that truly are invested in changing the greatest country in the world into a dept ridden communism. They appose people serving in the military because the military is an eye opener. People who serve see things they never would have and return to home, even if it has been just 2 or 3 years of service realizing that they do live in the greatest country in the world. This commission wants to discourage military service because we (the Military) want to discourage the destruction of what we serve to defend, what we bleed and die for
Yes I know this sounds the usual ultra right wing rant but it is not. Take a hundred poor kids from across the country with high school diplomas or GEDs that cant get a good job. Put them in uniform, feed, cloth, pay them a fair wage and take care of their families as the Military is suppose to do. They will join for the money, but they (90%) will stay in the military because they love it, and love those around them. They will return home having seen the world and knowing that this Nation is great, that while there are other grand places in the world, there is no place like America and they will want to keep it that way.
I really am curious, how many of the ‘commission’ voted for their own pay rise?
How many voted against giving Senior Citizens a cost of living increase?
How many voted to raise your taxes to pay for someone else home, medical care, and dept?
By the way, Check the retirement benefits of a two term senator or congressman.
“Change” we can live with out, the is the sort of Change that leaves the government as a nanny dolling out in small portions what you work so hard for and should pay for on your own but they will tax you to dept and than control your lives. “Change” that will destroy the fundamental institutions of this country and leave us bowing to foreign nations.
