The First 60 Seconds

Some questions that are asked of us cause us to look closely at aspects of our lives that we don’t really want to look at.  But the weight of a question does not offer us anything, unless we are able to answer it honestly.

This question has such great weight that most people won’t even acknowledge it;

How Will You Spend The First 60 Seconds After You Die?

Death is such a difficult subject for men and women to address that it is hardly ever brought up in casual conversation.  Yet, it is often mentioned in marriage vows and in the blessing of new births.

The weight of this question is not so much the subject itself; it is more the necessary preparation to honestly answer it.  Most of us are not willing to disclose our poor state of preparation, and a question such as this leads to revealing our poor state of preparation.

It is written in Proverbs 10:2 that, “Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, but righteousness delivers from death.”  In this verse of scripture there are three elements that are quite worthy of constant consideration.

We need to consider them constantly because we can; and we need to consider them constantly because we need to that much.  The first element is treasure: those places, things and people that we treasure.  If we believe that we will spend those first 60 seconds after we die missing these treasures, we will not want to look at this question at all.  It will only cause us to feel the sadness of that separation now rather than later.

The second element is wickedness: those things that we know without any doubt that we do that are not good but evil.  We hide and bury our acknowledgement of any wickedness we do.  So even reading or hearing the word wickedness sets off our automatic denial system.   Death and wickedness are not subjects that we are apt to allow into our daily thoughts and considerations, but they are there none the less.

The third element is righteousness: now this one is really tricky.  We can and do define our own sense of righteousness.  But in truth, (which we are unable to conclude on our own) righteousness belongs only to God.  And that is why it is written; “…righteousness delivers from death.”

Yes, it is true.  There is another very important element worthy of consideration in that verse from Proverbs.  That element is the use of the word delivers.  The act of deliverance has everything to do with those first 60 seconds after you die.  If you have accepted the gift made available to us by God, then you will have no problem answering this question.  If you have not accepted this gift and you want to be confident in your ability to answer this question and any other on this and many other deep levels, then now is the time to act.

Deliverance is provided by the Deliver, His name is Jesus.  He is the Christ, given by God Himself to rescue His human creation from their most certain end.  Why?  Good question, it is written in scripture; John 3:16 because He loves His human creation.  Why would anyone not want to be able to answer this question?  It is because they made a choice to not accept the gift that has been provided for them.  We have free will, and we can always choose, but the time to make that decision, is before we reach that First 60 Seconds After We Die.
