What are you waiting for?

Andy Rooney said on "60 Minutes" a few weeks back: And I respond: I don't think being a minority makes you a victim of anything except numbers.. The only Things I can think of that are truly discriminatory are things like the United Negro College Fund, Jet Magazine, Black Entertainment Television, and Miss Black America. Try to have things like the United Caucasian College Fund, Cloud Magazine, White Entertainment Television, or Miss White America; and see what happens...Jesse Jackson will be knocking down your door. Your very first statement is the most ignorant thing I’ve ever heard. Minorities are often the victims of hatred, violence, ignorance and intolerance. The rest of your statements below are proof enough of that. If anything, all the rest of your above statement does is point out that majority groups can also be the subjects of hatred, violence, ignorance and intolerance. As a poor white male in our society, I have been denied grants and loans for education that I may have otherwise been entitled to if I had been born a woman or a racial minority or if our society was able to get over the years of injustice and allow us all to see each other as equals. But I can’t deny that those injustices exist and are perpetuated by rich white males in our society (and probably a number of poor ones as well). So try starting up Cloud Magazine if you want. What would you write about? We’re already exposed to the white perspective all day every day. Jesse Jackson might oppose you, but no louder than you have opposed and offended a majority of the country with your rant here. And your rights to produce any magazine you wish would be supported by groups such as the ACLU, not because of your gender, race or position, but because they believe you have a right to speak your mind. It makes me SICK to think they have supported groups like the KKK on certain issues, but I look at all of the minority groups they have also sided with and am able to see that they stand in support of an issue, the protection of the rights set forth in our constitution. THAT gives them integrity and I have to respect them even when I occasionally don’t agree with them. Guns do not make you a killer. I think killing makes you a killer. You can kill someone with a baseball bat or a car, but no one is trying to ban you from driving to the ball game. A baseball bat provides a purpose-entertainment. A car has a purpose-transportation. What purpose do guns have other than death or destruction? There is simply no reason for them. As a matter of fact, you have a good point about cars and baseball bats too. Baseball is a boring sport that I’m not entertained by. I’d be happy to eliminate it too. Or at least the professional version. Nobody needs to be making that kind of money. Especially when there are so many unemployed in the country who can’t find jobs in respectable professions because the rich baseball players spend all of their money on drugs and gambling. And as for driving cars to baseball games, most ball parks are in metropolitan areas, right? So why aren’t people taking affordable and clean public transportation instead of driving alone in their gas guzzling SUVs when the world is on the verge of environmental collapse? Andy Rooney, you’re an idiot. I believe they are called the Boy Scouts for a reason, that is why there are no girls allowed. Girls belong in the Girl Scouts! I’m confused, Andy Rooney. Why is it wrong to have BET or the United Negro College Fund but ok to have Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts? You can’t have it both ways. Either it’s ok to discriminate or it’s not. What gives you the right to decide on what basis it’s ok and what basis it’s not? That’s the problem with conservatism. You’re CONSERVING old ideals regardless of whether they make sense or not just because that’s the way it’s always been. It makes you feel safe and comfortable. That’s not what this country is about. This country is about taking risks to make our world a better place to live in. At least that’s what I was told when I was growing up. It seems like less and less people are willing to stick their necks out to make it happen though. They’d much rather call each other names or go on long rants on 60 minutes which are apparently very popular even if they’re not very intelligent. I think that if you feel homosexuality is wrong, it is not a phobia, it is an opinion. That may be true, but how many people really keep their opinions to themselves on this topic? Even if they don’t speak about it, people who hold that viewpoint DO treat homosexuals differently, discriminate and judge them without taking the time to look into the discoveries science has made regarding this “condition.” And why don’t they research it for themselves, instead relying what others have told them? Because they’re afraid of what they might find out if they actually open up their minds. So, I guess there kind of is a phobia there after all, isn’t there? I have the right "NOT" to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird, or tick me off. You sure do. But we all also have the right not to be tolerant of you. When 70% of the people who get arrested are black, in cities where 70% of the population is black, that is not racial profiling, it is the Law of Probability. This is also true. However, if 80% of people who get arrested (or pulled over, or questioned, etc.) in cities where 60% of the population is black, how do you account for the difference? I believe that if you are selling me a milkshake, a pack of cigarettes, a newspaper or a hotel room, you must do it in English! As a matter of fact, if you want to be an American citizen, you should have to speak English! That’s funny. Because I would be willing to bet there are those in this country who believe business should be done in one of the native American languages. Some of the earliest settlers may have voted for French or Spanish too. Look at Quebec. They might not see eye to eye with the rest of Canada on everything, but they haven’t been kicked out of the country for doing business in French. America is a big place. If there were regions of this country that spoke a different language, I guess we’d just have to deal with it, wouldn’t we? I think the sign outside a business should be in the same language that is spoken inside. Then you know before entering whether you’ll be able to communicate with the cashier or not. If you can’t then I guess you’re both out of luck. Personally, I think you’re both ignorant for not making the effort to learn how to communicate with the other. My father and grandfather didn't die in vain so you can leave the countries you were born in to come over and disrespect ours. Actually, based on the First Amendment, they did. Of course, there are a lot of other EQUALLY VALID ideals that they protected as well. Maybe that is what you meant to say. I think the police should have every right to shoot your sorry ass if you threaten them after they tell you to stop. If you can't understand the word "freeze" or "stop" in English, see the above lines. What exactly are we talking about here? A physical threat? Sure, they already have the right to do that. But again, based on the First Amendment I should be allowed to call a cop any dirty name in the book and he’ll just have to sit there and take it. The cop knew what he was getting into when he took the job. I saw a documentary about a guy who became a cop. He didn’t want to issue parking tickets to people because he didn’t think it was right. Eventually, he did it because it was his job. I think in this country we worry too much about doing what is expected of us and not enough time worrying about doing what we know is right. As for the understanding English part of your comment, I already responded to that above. I don't think just because you were not born in this country, you are qualified for any special loan programs, government sponsored bank loans or tax breaks, etc., so you can open a hotel, coffee shop, trinket store, or any other business. I actually kind of agree with this one. I don’t think federal aid should go to new immigrants coming to this country over and above what the ordinary citizen should get. I think any citizen, regardless of generation in this country should have access to the same federal money. However, if banks or other organizations wish to give out special loan programs to various minority OR majority groups that should be their prerogative without any government intervention for OR against. We did not go to the aid of certain foreign countries and risk our lives in wars to defend their freedoms, so that decades later they could come over here and tell us our constitution is a living document; and open to their interpretations. No, most of the countries we defended we did so because we expected to get some political or economic gain out of it. That was a bad idea on our part. First of all when a nation (or an individual) is in crisis, they will agree to nearly anything to be free from the situation. That is unfair of us to put them in that predicament, and especially to hold it to them generations later when they have new leaders and we have new leaders that aren’t upholding our end of the bargain any more either. This also, by the way, applies to Christian and other religious groups who take advantage of the destitute both in our own country and abroad by providing some degree of charity in exchange for the opportunity to force their religious beliefs on others. Many victims of the missionary process are forced to see their new found advantage and a belief in Christianity as going hand in hand, when all it really is, is a ploy by the religious organization to recruit more followers. Charity should be for it’s own sake, which brings me to the next point… I don't hate the rich I don't pity the poor. I don’t hate the rich because they’re rich. I hate that many rich people became rich through unscrupulous practices. I hate that many rich people purchase luxuries without any consideration of the effects on society at large. If I were rich, I would still want a fuel efficient vehicle, not a gas guzzling SUV. And definitely not my own private jet. You sick egotistical bastards. Do you realize we all may have less than fifty years left on this planet due to a changing environment if we don’t change things right away? And finally, I hate that many rich people feel no social obligation to invest their money in projects that would benefit other human beings, who may have not had the same opportunities they had. Instead, they invest their money in business ventures that will make them even more money, which they obviously don’t need if they could afford to invest the initial money in the first place. When is enough enough? I know pro wrestling is fake, but so are movies and television. That doesn't stop you from watching them. Who cares? I think Bill Gates has every right to keep every penny he made and continue to make more. If it ticks you off, go and invent the next operating system that's better, and put your name on the building. I’m not going to address this here. I’ll talk about rich people and the unscrupulous business tactics that often make them rich later on. Just know that Bill Gates has done some bad things and one of them includes the design of Windows. Interesting that Macs don’t have nearly the number of problems with viruses as PCs do… It doesn't take a whole village to raise a child right, but it does take a parent to stand up to the kid; and smack their little behinds when necessary, and say "NO!" In a perfect world, the parent would know when enough is enough, but we’ve all been raised in an imperfect world and have scars left from our own upbringing. Sometimes it can be good to bring an outside perspective into the situation to be sure we’re not being too soft OR too hard. No individual can claim to have the final answer on anything. Life is a learning process. We do the best we can. (Assuming we don’t just accept and do what we’re told like mindless zombies.) I think tattoos and piercing are fine if you want them, but please don't pretend they are a political statement. And, please, stay home until that new lip ring heals. I don't want to look at your ugly infected mouth as you serve me French fries! Gee, I didn’t realize that the best someone who wears a lip ring could hope to aspire to is to serve you French fries. I know someone with a nose ring who is head of human services at a major corporation and someone with tattoos who manages investment portfolios, but apparently, when you have a lip ring it really holds you back. Wake up, Andy Rooney, and experience the 21st century. I am sick of "Political Correctness." I know a lot of black people, and not a single one of them was born in Africa; so how can they be "African-Americans"? Besides, Africa is a continent. I don't go around saying I am a European-American because my great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather was from Europe. I am proud to be from America and nowhere else. I agree that we should all be called Americans, regardless of religious or ethnic background. That would be ideal. But as long as we have ignorant folks like you who insist on identifying black people and white people and whatever other people as a group, I think it should be those people and not you who decide what their group should be called. I don’t even want to know what you would prefer to call them. And if you don't like my point of view, tough... Yup. And if you don’t like MINE… Tough… I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG, OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND TO THE REPUBLIC, FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL! You realize there was quite a debate when they discussed whether or not “under god” should be included in the pledge of allegiance, don’t you? And that it only won by a narrow margin? Look it up. I was asked to send this on if I agree or delete if I don't. It is said that 86% of Americans believe in God. Therefore I have a very hard time understanding why there is such a problem in having "In God We Trust" on our money and having "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. Why don't we just tell the 14% to Shut Up and BE QUIET!!! Said by who? And which god are we talking about. It’s pretentious of Christians to think that they have the line on the one TRUE god. And even if 86% of Americans believed in the Christian god, the 14% that don’t should not have religious views forced on them. Isn’t that the kind of thing we claimed to be fighting against when we fought Communism, even though we were actually initially opposed to their economic system, and that some of us talk about when discussing the middle east today? Ultimately, these battles have been all about money and not about freedom (religious or otherwise) because if they were, you would take a very different stance on many of the issues discussed above. If you agree, pass this on, if not delete. . Interesting. Either they’re completely with you, or they’re against you. I’m willing to accept that NOBODY who reads this will agree with everything I’ve said. But many will find that at least SOME of my words ring true. I hope that if you pass this on, you take the time to consider what you REALLY believe and add your thoughts to the message as well.
