TELEVISION

On the day of January 23,1977-the greatest event in the history of the world would change the format landscape of television as we know it. Even after years later,it still to this day holds the title of one of the best television mini-series of all time. Under the usual definition of a "series",ROOTS would not be included as a made for television movie-it was really an extended special. But in fact that it was the most-watched dramatic special in the history of television, and its considerable impact on its viewers was outstanding. The overall success of ROOTS was unprecedented. Approxiamately over 100 million viewers saw the concluding installment and it must be considered an event of considerable magnitude when nearly half of the entire population of the United States can be assembled in front of its television sets to watch a single dramatic presentation. No one,not even ABC,was prepared for anything this big. In fact, one of the reasons given for scheduling ROOTS on eight consecutive nights was that if it were a flop it would be over with quickly. But it wasn't. It became a tidalwave of a hit. And America was watching. Based on the best-selling novel by Alex Haley, based on his own roots was twelve years in the writing of this epic masterpiece. Its story began in 1750 in Gambia on the Western Coast of Africa, with the introduction of his ancestors and continued onward through the American South and further into the other descendants of his family stretching from Virginia into Tennessee. The television special ROOTS was daring in many ways, including its massive historical sweep, its often mature content, and its scheduling over a full week. However,it was not for the extended scenes of rape and nudity and not to mention some very disturbing racial content and violence that ROOTS received most of its criticism, but for distortion of history, particularly for its sensationalized version of black-white relations in the slave era within one of the most tarnished chapters of American History-the enslavement and cruelty of a another human being. It was pointed out that much of the cruelty attributed to racism was in reality the cruelty of the 18th and 19th centuries which affected whites fully as much as it did blacks;and the slave trade rested largely on African blacks selling their own people into slavery, not on "white slave parties". And this was very true. Whether or not the television special ROOTS was pseudo-history,it reached and affected an unprecedented audience, and its effect on future TV programming was pro-founded. It was also a ratings winner as well especially with the special record number of Multi-Emmys it won for its producer Stan Margulies and its executive producer David L. Wolper, not to mention a Hollywood A-List of great talented actors including some of the greatest African-American actors ever displayed on one event was a joy to behold. This special has been seen by a lot of people, and most times it is shown during the month of February, which is Black History Month and where the special is discussed on college campus during the subjects of African-American History and American History. This was sheer brilliance of a grand special that shines through every time it is shown.
