Watched ST:TMP (1979) tonight on my computer (as DVD player has died :( ) After reading all the bad reviews online I was reasonably pleasurably surprised! I enjoyed the premise of the film and although Kirk was definitely a little tubbier (and what's with the Fonz style hairdo? that's just wrong) the crew didn't look too aged.
The only problem was that the film spent far too long showing us special effects and not long enough with the characters, the good thing about Star Trek (like the other best SF dramas) is that it goes far beyond special effects - and this was borne out by the whole point of the film!! So there should have been less shots of bits of spacey stuff and more dialogue IMO, although I did think the scene in the sickbay was sweet (Kirk and Spock are friends. Ah.) - and I definitely think Spock should be on the Enterprise and not on Vulcan which looks like a horrid place what with all the wind and smoking bits of ground as well. Not surprised he wanted to leave!
Ah yes watched the "Gamesters of Triskelion" on SciFi channel also today (This is what people do who do not work I guess). I liked the camp person (man/woman????!?!?!?) who was Chekhov's drill thrall but overall I thought it was a bit of a pants episode. For one thing if it is to fit with the collar colour, the third brain should have been blue not green! And I didn't like the fighting :(
