I'd like to start this out by stating that I am NOT a comic book geek, but I did grow up reading Archie comics and Spiderman comics. In fact, I wish I had all the old Spiderman ones lol.
So I was very excited after the first Spiderman movie, because Hollywood finally caught the feeling of a comic book hero onscreen.
So when I heard that my second favorite character, Sandman, was going to be a main character, I was uberexcited. Played by Thomas Hayden Church, from Wings fame, It seemed very promising.
So we went on a Friday, the theatre was packed, and I couldn't wait. It started off with how Sandman became Sandman, and it was pretty cool. Thomas Hayden Church had the look down, was in good enough shape to pull it off.
Unfortunately, to me, it all went downhill after that.
I have discovered that maybe I am a geek. I have sort of come to terms with the fact that in the movies Spidey's webs come out of him. Even that they sort of dumb down Peter Parker. But there are some things in this movie that don't sit well.
1) Gwen Stacey and her father are introduced in this movie, with Gwen dating Eddie Brock. Peter in the books dated Gwen before Mary Jane, and Captain Stacey was killed long before MJ and Peter started dating.
2) Gwen was long gone before Eddie Brock came about.
3) The alien symbiote was introduced really cheesy, they could make a movie on how it was really done.
Those are the main three. I'm a big fan of timeline, and since I've read the books since I was a kid, them messing with it messes with me. But for the masses, doesn't mean a thing.
Back to the review. I was ok with Tobey Maguire, but his poor acting is wearing thin. Not to mention the fact that he's a tiny dude, so he comes across small on the screen.
Kiersten Dunst sucks as Mary Jane. She did in the first two, she will in all the ones that follow. I do not buy that she is this sexy woman that MJ is in the comics. Mj is busty, Kiersten is built like a boy, and isn't pretty enough to be MJ.
The costume designer does a great job with the outfits, except for Mary Jane. They make her look mousey, and MJ showed her stuff off.
Casting was so so too. The guy who plays Harry Osbourne is good, as is JJ Jameson, and Robbie. Tobey Maguire, Kiersten Dunst...suck. Topher Grace as Eddie Brock...sucked. He weighs 120 pounds. Thomas Hayden Church was a knockout though, did a great job. The lady who plays Aunt May is so so.
Okay, I am a geek. But I thought the movie started out really slow. The script was iffy. Tobey's performance was as unSpidermanish as you can get. The action was good when there was some. The special effects weren't bad.
As a whole, I was disappointed. The first two were waaaaaaaay better, even though the potential in this one was incredible.
I will give this a 5.5 out of 10. And they're lucky Thomas Hayden Church was in it, or it would ahve been lower.
