Hello Dr. Turi,
I just finished reading your article on owning firearms and self-protection, "Guns Kill or Save Lives?" A very exciting article for me, and you are right on the money, as usual. I've been reading, and thinking about all of the issues you addressed in your article for many years. If you don't mind, I'd like to add some useful information, some thoughts, and expand on some of your ideas. Congratulations on your concealed carry permit, though the permit should not be necessary, according to our Second Amendment. We should not have to stoop to asking for permission from the State to carry a firearm to protect ourselves. Our Constitution and Bill of Rights recognizes bearing arms as a "God-given" or "natural" right, not a privilege, doled out to us or denied us by agents of the State. People must realize that a privilege is something granted you by someone(s), and a right is something that is inalienable and cannot be touched, altered, negotiated, or taken away, like your fingers and toes, or your liver. It is yours unconditionally and you can do as you please with it.
"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." -- The Bill of Rights
We can argue all we like about what this amendment really means, and people do so all the time. What it all comes down to is this: you are going to have to make up your mind and pick a side. Guns or no guns? That is the question. I don't have to tell you which side I am on. On the other hand, I, like yourself, am a law-abiding individual and do not want any trouble with the cops, who are going to enforce their man-made laws no matter how wrong or ridiculous the law is. Thus, I allowed myself this bit of hypocrisy years ago and got my concealed carry permit as well. I have been carrying guns for many years. I don't leave home without one. I encourage anyone who might be reading this to, on principle, go out and get educated, get trained, and get your gun and start carrying as well. You alone are responsible for your safety. If you are relying on the police, or anyone else for that matter, to do it for you -- you are a fool. Not only can you not rely on the police to protect you, but, as incredible as this may sound, they are under no legal obligation whatsoever to do so. You don't believe me? A tazer is a good idea. A good one is very expensive, around a thousand dollars, but they are worth every penny. Don't be stupid and buy a cheap one that will fail when you need it. Spend the money and get a top-of-the-line product. Bear in mind however that, just like a gun, a tazer is not a toy. Just as you are going to be held legally responsible for every bullet that comes out of your gun, you will also be held legally responsible for every person you taze. Yes, people using tazers can and do kill people with them. It happens with the police frequently. They respond to a call, they decide to taze a person to take them down with "non-lethal force", and the person they zapped dies. Deadly force is nothing to fool around with. While "experts" say a tazer is not considered deadly force, I say it most certainly is, and should be treated as such. You can make up your own mind about that, but no matter how you make up your mind -- you are legally responsible for whomever you zap. Also bear in mind that most tazers can only be used once. You might have multiple attackers. Once you have spent your tazer and attackers are still forthcoming -- then what? What if there is only one attacker and you miss your shot or your shot is not effective? Then what? I hope you have plan B ready. I know I do.
Dogs are an excellent idea for home protection. Most people can't afford a well-trained dog, but they shouldn't let that stop them from getting a dog. I got my two loyal guard dogs out of the animal shelter for $13.50 each. I trained them to make a horrible racket whenever someone comes around the house. And I trained them to check the house on my command, and when everyone goes to sleep. The dogs will sniff out any trouble I failed to detect, and they will warn me of danger 24/7/365. No one comes near my house unless I want them to. All this protection for a mere twenty seven bucks! Dogs are indeed man's best friend. They will love and protect you no matter what the consequences. Even a little yapper who makes all kinds of racket will scare just about any crook away. The last thing a hoodlum wants is onlookers and attention from passersby or other people in the building, whatever the case may be. Also, many people, even big, strong goons, believe it or not, are frightened of dogs and won't go near them. When they hear or see a dog, no matter how big or small it is, they leave without further ado.
Don't yell "Rape!" or "Help!" if you are being attacked. It will scare cowardly people away and they will leave the area, not wanting to get involved. Instead, yell, "FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!" -- and everyone will come to see what is going on. Again, remember, the last thing a crook wants is an audience. "Fire!" will always bring every curious, rubber-necked onlooker within earshot to your location. I don't recommend the martial arts as a way of learning self-protection. If your only goal is learning to protect yourself, keep away from the martial arts. For many years I went from school to school of the martial arts and asked many teachers and students to teach me how to fight, how to protect myself. I wasn't the least bit interested in their flowery, beautiful movements and all the "Yes, Sir, no, sir" stuff, or the so-called "discipline" (The only discipline there ever was or can ever be is, self-discipline.) Anyway, I just wanted to get to the meat of it and learn what to do when surrounded by a gang of thugs who were going to kick my ass just for laughs, for example. The martial arts were willing to teach, but the martial arts cannot be learned rapidly enough. By the time you actually learn anything that is going to do you any good out on the streets, you may already have been attacked, and hurt, or killed. What good is that? You need something you can use right now, on the spot. If your "self-defense" class isn't giving you something to take home daily that you can actually use for your self-defense, you should think twice about going back to that class next day. If your "instructor" refuses to answer your questions and tells you that you can't learn this technique or that technique because you haven't yet risen to the level of this belt or that belt, it is time to move on. Throw your martial arts away, you don't need it anymore. In my line of work, I have had to take on many a street thug. I once worked security in the most notorious neighborhood in Las Vegas. Gang-bangers, thugs, punks, dope-dealers, idiots everywhere. Takedowns, edged weapons, arrests, fights, you-name-it, I've been there done that. And I walked away from all of that without so much as a scratch. What is your most potent weapon? Surprisingly, most of the population does not know the answer to this question. The answer is: your brain. Use it -- or lose it, people.
I, too, avoid confrontation at all costs. Good to see that you don't let some moron bruise your ego and take control of you, Dr. Turi, forcing you to act against your own will, lose your temper, and become the aggressor, and do something stupid. After all, even idiots have a right to their opinion. But when the shit hits the fan, there is only one way to go. As Tim Larkin says, "Violence is rarely the answer, but when it is the answer -- it is the only answer!" And nothing else will do.
