THIS TIME

This Time

Another round of funerals, another picture collage of grief stricken families, innocent victims, and an outraged populace. Another round of calls for an end to the madness. Another time for the cynics whose actions have foisted this savagery on us, waiting for everyone to calm down and go back to business as usual.

When it was Columbine, Virginia Tech and Denver the gun crowd said the killings would have been prevented, if we allowed everyone to carry a gun. As if a bunch of people shooting guns blindly in a smoke filled darkened theater wouldn’t have elevated the death toll, as if our students would be safer with more firearms in our schools and universities.

This time was different. This time it was our children each of them shot multiple times at close range. What do they say now? Do they expect us to believe the murdered six and seven year olds would have saved themselves if only they’d been allowed to keep a Saturday night special in their desks?

This time it wasn’t a shopping mall, a theater or a drive by. This time it was an elementary school. A score of our children paid for our madness with their lives.

This time, our political leaders make noises about finally doing something. They talk about maybe outlawing automatic weapons so the Adam Lanza’s will have to reload more often, thereby allowing more chances to escape. They say that maybe we should require background checks at gun shows so the mentally deranged and criminals can’t walk right up and buy whatever they want.

Let’s not get too hopeful that even these small measures will come to pass. The NRA and its allies have yet to weigh in. As it has in the past, the pro-gun crowd, will call in their political IOU's, make threats and empty some of their massive coffers for campaign donations to make the voices of the politicians fall silent.

These are the people who stood up against a proposed Wisconsin law that would make it a felony to buy guns for criminals and insane individuals. These are the people who torpedoed bans on the automatic weapons Lanza used in his shooting spree.

This time let's remember that we are a people who've done incredible things. We can find the political will to protect citizens going about their everyday lives unaware that an insane killer will gun them down before the day is over.

This time we should feel shame along with grief, as the parade of little and big caskets passes graces the front pages of our newspaper and leads our newscasts. Shame for letting it go on for so long. This time we MUST stand up fully aware of our power and our capacity to do things no one thought possible.

This time we can't leave it to the NRA to tell the politicians how the American people think. We need to understand that we have always been the ones with the power. We need to get our elected officials on the phone and tell them we’ve had enough.

This time let the politicians know that the NRA may buy their votes but they can’t buy ours.
