Well, this is my first blog here on cherry tap, Im only writting this to sort of explain what the deal is with all the changing pictures I put up as my default. A lot of people came to cherrytap for the popularity contest and that is fine I suppose. I enjoy the rattings and all that but I am hear mostly to meet other people intrested in art of any kind. I love to draw, to write , and to carve so I apreciate almost any kind of art.
Anyway about a year ago this march, my daughter and I went down to the little river by our house to go fishing. As is typical of Sioux Falls SD, the fish were not cooperating, so we ended up looking around and found that there were a lot of shells lying in the sand and the weeds along the shore. We started to pick a few up and I got to thinking. These are such intresting shells...They are not as beautifull as abalonie or artistically shaped like a welk but there was something about them. I decided to cut a few of them up with my trusty dremmel. The result is what you see in the pictures I post as my default. IT has been a work in progress and a learning experiance. I am constantly finding new ways to use the shells and new shapes to carve. My goal is to make chocker style necklaces and eventually build my way into making some real jewlery.
I have always been facinated by natures beauty, and this is my way of trying to bring some of that beauty home and to share it with all of you.
I have recently deciced to try carving bone as well and that I have really liked. The bone does not shatter the way shells do if you are not carfull. There is also a type of local crystal knon as Aragonite. IT is soft like calcite, but will shine up very nicely. There is a lot of septarian nodual in this part of South Dakota and I have picked up quite a bit of it. Some of the aragonite veins are over an inch thick. So far Ive cut out and shapped a few rough arrowheads not traditional arrowheads but still fairly nice looking. Eventually I would like to collect some other gemstone and make Cabs and jewlry from that as well.
So in a nut shell that is my most recent hobby and it is fast becomming my obsession
