School Safety

Do you feel the schools in the U.S. are safe? Do you think the school officials are being truthful, or are they more worried about how they look in a statistical report? Do you think they have the bullying of children under control? Do you think the whole system needs revamped? Some of these are easy questions some are tough, some you have to live through to see the light. Earlier this week our son was attacked by a group of boys, up to 6 at a time. three times within a one hour period, the teacher wasnt around and chose to leave the class unnatended twice. The school never notified us of anything until later that night. The school nurse was never called in to see if our son was hurt. We took him to the emergency room after he called us and asked us to come pick him up at school as he was detained in the principles office and missed the bus. The attending physician called in law enforcement, which saved us a trip, as the police station was our next stop. The police are now investigating the incedent and are building a case to bring to the D.A. here. Before the police could start interviews with the kids the counselors deemed it neccessary to hold a meeting with all of the children in our sons grade. Maybe it was for safety, maybe it was to cover their asses, either way the police were never informed that this was to take place before their investigation could begin. They never mentioned our sons name during the meeting, but one of the boys involved took it upon himself to make sure it was known. And its a small town so word travels fast. We have spoken with the principle and he has stated that there was a loop hole in the class transition system, and he is so sorry that it took an incedent like this to make it known. For every reason he gave for the existence of so called loop holes I gave him two solutions that had zero effect on his schools budget, towards the end of the meeting I wanted to ask him if he wanted paper and pencil to take notes. I did alot of research on the safety of our states schools, and at first glance you would feel they have the situation well in hand, but after comparing report after report, there where quite a few major discrepancies uncovered. The most outstanding one was that the state only listed our school district in 2003-2004 school session as only having two fights in the entire district, and those happened to have occured at the elementery school. Kinda hard to believe, as we had been to the then principles office more than that for actions against our son from the same boys involved now. When the principle was asked as to why the states statistics never show all of the altercations that occur in the schools here, (this was after he was quizzed as to how many altercations take place in a given school year). His reply was "the state always screws up our numbers, its their computers that do it, we just send in reports". This matter is being brought up with the State Board of Education, and will be until an answere is found and the statistics corrected. The principle felt is was only worth a two day suspension for three of the boys involved was punishment enough. He also wanted to suspend our son for his involvement, but later backed down from that decision after the visit to his office. We are pushing for felony charges to be brought against the attackers as our son does suffer from a learning disability, as well as restitution for property damage, his hearing aid was broken during the assaults. We arent going to let this die or be swept under the table by some political process. Its time to start holding the schools our kids attend accountable in every way for their safety and monitoring while they are in their care. This is funny in a way to, during my reseach I discovered a teacher at the same school our son attends is suing the school because her classroom is uncomfortable, it seems it get hot and cold to often, give me a break its in the mountains thats how the weather is up here. In our state alone reports that do make it through the computer glitches as they call them show, 60,000 children are victims of bullying. I believe its time for a major wake up call. This blog isnt for sympathy or anything like that, its a reminder for everyone to take a look at your local school systems and see if they are prepared to protect your children, and if they are reporting the true facts in regards to violence in their own halls. I will post new news as it can be released.
