This is an email I sent my family on Sept 24, 2005. The hurricane hit on Aug 29. Today I saw a news report on how the peoples of New Orleans were in such bad shape and suffering from Delayed Stress disorders. The newsman told of doctors needing help to handle the influx of people that were living in what he considered a war zone were the destruction of Katrina still darkens the landscape. On August 4th, 2001, while walking across a street, I was struck/run over by a Ford Explorer. From that event I sustained MANY injuries, but the most serious of which was (is) a Traumatic Brain Injury. Now (and for the rest of my life) I'm just a little slower than most. Physically, my entire left side is weaker and less coordinated. While I did re-learn to walk and talk, my balance has been so irrepairably damaged I'll (probably) never ride a bike again. I have barely any problems doing "normal" everday activities, but learning new things might take me a while. I understand in order to go beyond level 10-Friend of CherryTap, a salute pic has to be posted. I meant to do one this weekend, but I didn't get it done. I think the salute pic is a great idea. A lot of you already know my Granddaddy has been in the hospital since Thanksgiving in pretty bad shape. He has been in and out of ICU several times and was moved to a long term critical care hospital a month ago. Last night we got a call from my family, his heart stopped yesterday and it took them over 8 minutes to get him back. In the process the doctor told my grandmother that several ribs were broke. He is now on life support and the doctor told us that if his heart stops again with his ribs broken that if they perform life saving measures again there is sure to be organ damage. With a very hard decision my Grandmother decided to sign a DNR. We went down last night to say our goodbyes and today they are probably going to start taking him off the machines. I haven't heard anything from the hospital this morning and will not be on much at all the next few days. Please keep me and my family in your thoughts and I will send more news when I have it. Keeper I grew up in the 50's/60's with practical parents. A mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen, before they had a name for it... a father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones. Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. I have been very lucky in life. Sure, there are depressing aspects to my life -- to anyone's life -- but generally I have been very lucky. I have a great job I enjoy, a wonderful house, and lots of people who love me. As a result, I do my best to give back to the community. I'm a Big Sister and mentor to a little girl named Michelle (who rocks!), and I'm a Soldiers Angel, which means I write and send packages to soldiers deployed overseas. And every year I participate in our company fundraiser. This year, we're doing the Highmark Blue Cross Walk for a Healthy Community, and our proceeds will benefit the Cerebral Palsy Association of Pittsburgh, which has programs not only for those with CP, but anyone with disabilities in the area. It seems that recently my life has taken a pretty good beating. I try to live by my personal philosophy of not letting life get to you. Lately though it seems to be harder and harder to do that. I am still not out looking for work. I am trying to get the medication in line for now. All I seem to be able to do is sleep. I hate taking things that make my mind not mine. We feel helpless cause there's nothing we can do to stop the pain. We keep them close, say a prayer for them, but it doesn't stop the pain, or the tears from falling.
